peckingham palace
One of my Omlet gingernut rangers Lily, doesn't seem too well today, we got her 3 weeks ago. She has always been a little behind the others and I thought it was because she was quite a bit younger. She has akways been bright and perky before today but she is just sitting away from the others and seems quite lethargic, all the other 8 are charging around, scoffing their layers pellets and just doing their thing. Lily has lounged in the nest box and just round the garden most of the day uninterested in food or joining in. I know its tricky to diagnose without seeing her but could anyone out there advise me, I hate to think of any of them feeling poorly! Can't see any outward signs of distress, injury or obvious warning signs!
percy049
Lets go through the basic first: have you wormed them, or checked for lice recently? She might be laying a softie. Sorry, I cant help you too much, im sure someone more knowledgeable will come soon
Ain't Nobody Here
Those are the 3 things I would have suggested too .
peckingham palace
There was a soft egg this morning, not wormed them since I got them 3 weeks ago but planned to do it this weekend. Can't see any lice on close inspection, stupid question but would they be blatantly obvious if they did have them?
Ain't Nobody Here
Info on lice/mites from the FAQs here. Yes, they are pretty obvious if you part the feathers near the vent and have a good look.
peckingham palace
Thanks ANH, we have checked her over, no lice or mites visible. We have some of the Vermex wormer from Omlet and will dose them all for the next 3 days. Do you think Flubenvet is better and if I use that do we need to throw away the eggs laid during the treatment period and for sometime afterwards. Sorry for all the questions but we are real novices. Thanks for helping out its much appreciated. Dee
Chortle Chook
If she isn't interested in food have you thought of Sour Crop or Impacted Crop (two different things). If she has been eating nice fast growing spring grass she could have either of these. For more info on them take a look at the health section on this forum. One word of caution, don't leave it too long as things can get nasty fast. I don't want to alarm you but one of my first hens died of sour crop just a week after I had got her, and it is so awful to think that I could have prevented it
peckingham palace
Hmm, no thanks for that, she hasn't access to long grass, I had read about this before we got the girls, but worth mentioning it. I have checked her crop and all seems well. I will see how she is in the morning and if I am not 150% happy with her I will pop her along to the vet. Thanks again x
percy049
For verm-x and flubenvet, there is no egg withdrawal period (so you can still eat their eggs when you are treating them). verm-x is more of a preventative, where as flubenvet actually gets rid of the worms (if they have any). I would get the flubenvet 1% online, and just about everyone on the forum recomends flubenvet now
peckingham palace
Thanks Percy, any suggestions for a website or do you all just google for the best sites? Sorry I'm all questions today aren't I!

peckingham palace
Absolutely cheaky chooks, she is absolutely fine and went onto lay her first proper egg the next day. She is a little overshadowed by the other girls but very special to us. Perhaps I was a little ogver anxious, but rather that than make a mistake. Many thanks for asking after her xx
Chortle Chook
I'm so glad all turned out well. Better be a safe if anxious chooky Mum than a sorry one
peckingham palace
Thanks, that's what I thought, better to ask for advice and look a proper idiot, than sit tight and make a fatal error for poor Lily. Am too old to change now so shall no doubt be on again with another query!
