stoice
My mum, it seems, has developed a chronic case of Morehens disease. It's been developing for a while and the signs are all there. Tomorrow she's coming to pick me up and we're going to Landbase Poultry just down the road from me. She says it's 'just to look' but I know she's recently bought and converted a dog kennel into temp accommodation and divided her WIR. Seems the only way to make her 'better' is to buy some chooks! She has three already - Ruby, a Redco - reliable layer Poppy, a bluebelle of 3.5 years on a permanent go-slow - has laid maybe two eggs in the last year. And Fizz, another Redco who has lately grown a larger comb and is developing spurs No eggs for past 2/3 weeks. She wants maybe a speckledy, a light sussex and a blackrock. She needed more eggs so naturally she'll buy more chickens. Omlet logic obviously. Will post pics tomorrow. stoice
My Dad converted a dog kennel bought on sale from zooplus by dividing it inside into a nesting area and roosting area, adding a door which is also the ramp and painting it green to match the rest of the WIR. I think he's done a really good job... Mum has sectioned of a section the older girls run so she was all set for the new girls. She spent ages deciding what to get as they were all so pretty. In the end she got a light sussex hybrid (Hattie), the darkest black rock they had (Hilda) and the lightest Pied suffolk they had (Dotty). We were told they are 18 weeks + and I'd say that Dotty has a few weeks on her sisters judging by her headgear. They settled in quite well although mums older three made them selves known to the whole neighbourhood by a loud protest. (My mum had already warned a bribed neighbours with eggs though so it should be ok) "This'll do nicely thankyou" Fluffy bums!

Olly
Gorgeous - and top marks to your dad for the converted kennel - it looks better than a lot of custom-made ones!

stoice
Your Suffolk Pied has all white on her brest, where as ours has got some black there. Yes there were two in the run like that and they were really striking. Just after we got her out of her pen there was another family there getting chickens and they snaffled the other one. I wonder if they are omletters?

vickichicky
How CUTE! Excellent photo's too Neat job of converting kennel - much better than my first purchase of a wooden house! When I convinced my OH to let me keep chickens just over 2 years ago - he restricted me to 2 ExBatts.... well we came home with 3 from the start I gradually added another 2 here and there from different Chicken sellers and ended up with 8 at one time Now I have hatched out 10 eggs.....(he is quite enamored by the chicks) but I plan to keep one of the inevitable Cockerals! Good luck with the new girls.

It looks great well done Sorry to put a spanner in the works but dose the nesting box have ventilation holes This is vital as the girls need good ventilation, This can be achieved by making a few largish holes about 1". stoice
Yeah, although not seen in the earlier pics, the one of it in situ has a few holes drilled in either side. Each one about the size of a 50p to let air flow across the top in side the house.

stoice
LOL, my mum keeps him pretty busy with other 'odd jobs' around the house - I daren't steal him away! There's always something to do for the chooks. He built her older girls run, added a mezzanine and perches, and roofed it, built them an outside extension, divided that extension for the new girls. He sometimes grumbles but I've seen him talking the girls and giving them treats. He loves them really. Bless. He also assembled my WIR from avairies4u and custom fit it into the corner of my garden butting up to my brick wall and shed too. He is a bit handy really! He'll hate me posting a pic of him but here he is building my WIR last year...
