supplements for female dogs in season.

Recommended Posts

My lab tends to get a very dull coat and loose conditon just before she comes into heat, She gets

fish oil everyday and glosucimine tablets and a cupful of cider vinegar at night.

I guess it's her hormones but woundered if anyone new of something that could help her inbalance (like our EPO and starflower oil)

If it is your lovely prize winning dog I should think that her puppies will be very much in demand. Labs can have a whole hatful of medical conditions these days. I believe that ever since they concentrated on breeding for hips, temperament and elbow issues have appeared - I wont remain on my soapbox for fear of detracting from the topic

On topic, there is a product called Collovet which is a good tonic, particularly for working dogs and those with poor appetites. I remember a lot of greyhound trainers using it. I also remember someone being given some along with a syringe to measure out the dose. They came back and complained that their dog was getting quite difficult to dose as they were finding the injection painful :shock: They had got hold of a needle and were injecting the poor dog with it :wall: - so if you use it, it goes in food

I dont understand. If you are breeding her (and no lets not get into that one I think my view on that is clear from my sig) why not get on with it rather than put yourself and her through unmated seasons? :|

She's only two

What age are you going to breed her then? Id have thought 2 was a perfect age...Are you going to keep all the puppies?

I didn't really want to continue to post off topic but would like to make a couple of points. I have worked with animals for 30 years, 5 of which were with the RSPCA on the 'front line' - I have put to sleep many many healthy dogs sadly :( - so I speak with a good deal of experience. This person is considering breeding from her well trained, well cared for, healthy dog with and excellent temperament from working stock. She is waiting until the dog is at the best age to breed by which time her success in the working field will have guaranteed her puppies homes before they are born. These new owners are not going to be 'in the market' for a staffyx rescue from the local rescue kennels - they wont be much success in their chosen sport of field trials lets face it. What about working collies, are their owners in the wrong to be breeding from their good working stock? I applaud your stand re the situation with dogs/training/neutering etc Rhapsody but really don't believe that having a go at someone that patently is an example of a responsible owner and potential breeder (on a very small scale). There are much bigger and better battles to fight :)

Sorry for perpetuating the derailing of this subject. Perhaps it can now return to topic and any further comments make on a new thread if anyone wished to pursue the merits or their dislike of breeding.
