poppy ben grace
hi all, i often see a beautiful red kite cruising the sky around our area and was wondering if anyone knows if they would try to take a bantam? I only let them fr when i am here and the dogs are always in and out of the garden, would be greatful of any feedback, Hilary.
Cinnamon
No,they would be very unlikely to. They are carrion feeders,so would not take any living creature - we have them nesting just a few hundred yards from the house - amazing birds, aren't they? snowberry
On the BBC news website today they discussed the 'problem' Red Kites' in Oxfordshire; one was seen to take a squirrel away; Here's the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-13614326
Chucky Mama
In the main they pick over carrion but they will take smaller birds and animals. I guess the safety of your bantams depends on their size and how hungry and bold your red kite is. They do tend to be quite fearless around people. They are moving in around here and will happily fly quite low alongside me walking the dog. I love seeing them but then don't have bantams
Lavenders_Blue
We have lots of red kites round here - they are magnificent birds. I wouldn't imagine your banties are in any danger, as Cinnamon says, they are carrion feeders and very very rarely take live prey.
poppy ben grace
Thankyou everyone, has put my mind at rest! They are such beautiful birds, we love to see it and it comes most days, think it may have nested nearby.
