The Dogmother
We did this last year; my parents decided that the grandchildren had way too many toys already, so sent piggies to Africa on their behalf, they each got a wooden piggie to remind them, and a small present. Send a Cow sent packs explaining how the cows would provide manure, milk and meat to the people who are given them. Rosie appreciated it, but I'm not sure my sister's two did! For my mother's 70th this year we did similar and clubbed together to send a flock of 70 chickens to Africa for her - she was dead impressed, especially after she said that she didn't want any pressies. I've just seen that 'Rachel's Organic' yoghurts have a 'send a cow promotion' going on. If you log onto their website and input the barcode form your purchase, they'll pledge to send a cow to Africa for every so many (can't remember the figure) purchases of the product. - brilliant, healthy and helping the starving! Multi-tasking at it's best. Good value as we buy them anyway (Tesco) see http://www.sendacow.org the website says it all, and there are some lovely pix of the chickens they send out there too. ali-s
What a great idea Clare. I never know what to get parents or parents in law for Christmas, they seem to have everything. They live down south so presents are chosen on postability and postage costs which limits the choice. Really fancy sending a few Chickens on their behalf. Will look into it further. Thanks for the idea.
The Dogmother
It's great Ali, but you have to be sure that they will be into it - my parents got a funny look from my sis when they did it for the small last year. Said something along the lines of it not being a 'proper present' The site is easy to use and if you place the order, then call them, they will make sure that you have a picture of your chosen creature to send to the recipient. I love it and gave a flock of 20 chickens on behalf of a new baby for a christening present - figured that they don't need much else at that age, and should apprecaite the thought when they are older. Mel (& Paul)
That's great Clare! I have already been on the oxfam unwrapped site - but very disappointed to see they didnt seem to be doing chooks this year - so will check "send a cow" site out (do you think I could send my mother in law ) I have decided to do oxfam / similar for most people this year - except Paul doesnt think we should do his family as he is not sure they'll be appreciated. Tough. I am fed up of buying stuff for people which they dont want / dont need - and if next year I get a similar "present" back I'd be chuffed - our house is full of stuff we dont need (bath salts anyone?) The Dogmother
My thoughts exactly Mel! Shall we start a RANT?
Lesley
We use World Vision for our presents. We already have a flock of 10 chickens from my sister (courtesy of Oxfam) This year we will club together to do something - starting with a 'bicycle for a midwife'

Cate in NZ
Thanks for the link Dan, there's some great ideas there- I'm planning on getting someone a piece of the rainforest, and there's several chicken alternatives too. It's got to be done
Sue1411
Its a really good site. We had our wedding list there earlier this year. Much more useful than receiving 4 toasters or stuff we didn't really need or want and that way we didn't have to replace anything & no one got offended.
