Problem with Omlet Miss Pepperpots from Jan 09

Recommended Posts

Is this just a coincedence, or should I be contacting Omlet officially about this? Do you think these two hens having the same issue (described below, albeit two years apart) is a coincedence? Has anyone else had any issues with PP's from Jan 09?

Its taken me a couple of weeks to get to doing this as I've been so sad at having to have my lovely friend Holly put to sleep. The niggle in my head is that she is the second of our Omlet Miss Pepperpots to have needed to be put to sleep with the same issue.

We got three Omlet hens at the end of Jan 09. We had two Miss Pepperpots & one Gingernut Ranger. The GNR is a beautiful hen who has laid consistantly (apart from a bout of the bacterial thing they get which I can't remember the name of!). However we had an issue with one of the PP's in June 09 - she wasn't forming eggs properly and was straining so much that she'd prolapsed a couple of times. In conjunction with the vet we decided that it wasn't fair to let her prolapse every day, so on 27th June 2009 we had her put to sleep.

The other PP was not very consistant with her laying - maybe 5 eggs in a week, but with some softie patches lasting three weeks or so & sometimes not laying anything for a couple of weeks. In her life I had to sit her on a water bottle to stop her being broody about 10 times & she plucked all of her tummy feathers when she went broody as well. The feathers grew back (she was laying throughout the time she had a bare tummy) & all was well. Then she started to lay inconsistantly again, then she wasn't well again (back out came the hot water bottle). Then she had two weeks with no eggs, feeling 'down in the beak' which culminated in her laying a yellowy eggy mess for a couple of days. She partially prolapsed during this time as well. We took her to the vets on 8th June this year & again he diagnosed that she wasn't forming eggs properly & we decided to have her put too sleep as well.

Sorry for the essay. I just wanted to give you all the information.

Thank you for reading this far! I love my girls, but losing this special lady has taken some of the joy out of keeping chickens. So I don't know if I'm just reading too much into the situation.

sorry to hear about your 2 girls, just wondered if you have tried to contact omlet? i know you got them a while ago but they really do have excellent customer service.

I don't think they will be able to help really, it is probably the same if you bought them from a different source.

The problem could be related if they had an infection such as IB when young or soon after you had them which affects the laying 'gear' causing softies and other problems resulting in prolapses but proving it over such a length of time would be impossible and what would you achieve.

You've had some good years with your 2nd Pepperpot and as others have said it's a very common problem with hybrids. I've a gingernut who although not broody follows the same pattern as your pepperpot but I love her and just take each day as it comes with some very interesting eggs.

It's hard losing them but try not to let it spoil it for you. Try and think of the fun things and joy she has brought over the years.
