Attempted fox break in last night ... Tried again last night

Recommended Posts

The (pink eglu) where the silkies live has been under siege  All the plastic edging has been ripped and bitten from around the edge (was there to keep chicks in) and my new clear omlet cover is torn  The tray at the back looked like it had been dislodged and there was digging around the eggport  Their door was open last night but I shall be closing it from now on and will be going to the garden centre later to get some heavy slabs for around the edge :talk2hand:

Very scary. :(

I have nearly all my runs on weldmesh now to stop the digging

A brick or breezeblock behind the tray may help and double check the catch is working properly

I've had the same where a tarp was shredded it is astonishing how much damage a fox can do to one!

Had thought of putting something against the tray and have checked the lock this am. My WIRs are on weldmesh but the (pink eglu) is grass, I've only just moved it strangely - it's still on grass but I have enclosed it with woodchip held in with big logs - I reckon it thought it could dig under as you can't see the skirt - good old eglu run design :P

Thank goodness they were OK, what a shock for you though. All the best with upping the defences, the foxes will try again. I agree about something behind the tray, but it needs to be heavy, a fox can swipe a brick away easily.

Sorry the fox has discovered you, and may come back in the day too, and made such a mess after you've done such a good job, I'm so glad your girls were safe.

Yeah, our shower curtain has been ripped from its fastenings by a fox, two nights running, no signs of any other disturbance though so the weighed down skirting must be okay!

Are you guys talking about the droppings tray? Is that a security issue?!

blimey... my chooks aren't in it tonight, but up until this evening our incinerator has been parked behind it, I moved it to give me clearance to get the tray out, but perhaps I'll put the incinerator back there for the night times when I put the girls back in tomorrow!

does anyone know if the urine idea works...apparently you are supposed to get the males in your family to ummmmm ummmm 'relieve' themselves by the run  ...it makes it smell as if humans are there!!! My male dog always pees on the eglu so maybe that is why I have had no fox visits.

My OH pees in a bottle and pours it round the garden perimetre, but it doesn't deter the foxes at all.

I've also heard hanging human hair round the run works, not tried it myself as it makes me think of horror films  but I'd be interested to know.

DH ran the weldmesh under the slabs then cemented them down on our WIR - after I read so much info on here about foxes and how they get in, I couldnt not do it! Safe girls = we can all sleep soundly :D

When my chicks hatched, I put my plastic edging on the inside of the run (at the time I looked a right plum sitting inside the run attaching it - to the point where my son thought it was the height of hilarity to shut pen  ) After seeing the damaged caused to yours, I'm glad I did.

Or this morning as woken at 7 by shouting from the girls, ran up the garden and they were still in the cube shouting so something must have scared them back in  Had a look round and the bricks around the small WIR had been thrown around and a log destroyed, the quail are in here now and luckily I have buried weldmesh underneath. It had tried to dig but not got anywhere - all quail fine and seemingly not bothered (they are quite thick though  ) Why does it always have to be Sunday morning when you really don't want to disturb your neighbours :wall: Suppose because the roads are quiet it takes a chance :x

Thank goodness everyone is OK

You are right about Sunday mornings though, egg announcement here at 7.05am..... It was Abi and hers are the loudest :wall: However, only 2 minutes later the flock of wild geese decided to do a fly by, so we may have got away with it  as the geese dont half make an almighty racket

Have now got the lost seagull (affectionately named Steven... Get it? ) who has been visiting us for 2 years sat on the big WIR shouting for some breakfast

And the sheep and cows in the farm behind have started havimg conversations :D

Remind me again why I worry about noise from my girls :oops:
