I feel sick with worry

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm sure you have all heard this all before or experienced this but I am so worried I feel sick!

This is my first time hatching eggs, so am not experienced to make the right decision.

My eggs are in a brinsea Mini advanced incubator and reached day 21 today. I came down at 7.30 am to find 3 of the eggs had pipped and were cheeping. Well it's now 8pm and they are still chirping every now and again - they haven't zipped and the hole hasn't got much bigger. I can see the membrane under the shell and it's White.

I'm really worried the membrane has gone hard and they can't get out. It's taken all my will power not to open the incubator to pick off some of the shell!

I don't know if I should wait until the morning and see what's happened and then try and help or help now or what?

All I know is I've been reading all sorts of things on the Internet which has me seesawing from they will be fine as it can take 24 hrs to I need to dive right in and help NOW!!!

Any advice please

Kirstie

It is tough. You have to think that a strong chick would make its way out.

If I were you and I've been in this situation (once I waited too long and the chick died, on other occasions it worked) I'd do nothing until morning if you are sure humidity is okay. In the morning if no progress has been made then help a bit but stop if you see blood. You could always put a bit of kitchen roll that is moist and at blood heat against the pipped area.

So basically don't do anything until morning.

You'll probably find they are pipping in a different area that you can't see.

I've got a broody sitting on 6 eggs, one hatched this morning and had pipped yesterday. The other eggs haven't done anything yet and it is driving me potty yet I know I have to be patient it is only just day 22.

:D Hi,

Well this morning I came down to one gorgeous chick that had hatched - and it was one of the ones that I had thought I would have to help so that was great news! Then on the school run I was thinking I was going to have to help the two other ones that hadn't moved on from yesterday(I have 6eggs in the incubator in total 3 of them were the struggling ones) but got back to find one hatching and the other was the same as yesterday but another egg had also moved on - so within 2 hrs we had a total of 3 chicks all cheeping in the incubator and falling asleep on everything!

I have another egg which looks like it will hatch today and with the remaining problematic egg I have chipped off the shell around the top in a band (not all the way but enough hopefully) i have left the membrane in tact and think if nothing by teatime I may :? Break the membrane a bit more - but do feel if it can't do that itself maybe it's not a good chick?

The last egg (egg 6) isn't due to hatch until Sunday/Monday - I put it in later as I hadn't filled the incubator and the girls hadn't laid enough in time! so if it hatches great but feel relieved now as we def have 3 and there's a

possible 2 still to hatch without even thinking about the very last one xxx

Thank you all for your advice - I am chilled about the whole thing now (prob due to going to bed at midnight, waking at 3 to check on eggs, taking 2 hrs to get back to sleep as I was excited, then just as I drifted off my daughter came in to tell me she'd had a bad dream, then again at 6 my cat was sick! So I just got up!)

Why does it happen like that!

Oh dear this last one has caused all sorts of trouble and I'm calling him or here blip at the moment as this is a blip!

It was doing the I'm dying gasping so I helped it out of the sack - which went fine until he fell out of the egg and is now bleeding from his naval - I think it is still oozing slightly which I know is not good.

Is there anything I can do to help it stop - apply pressure? Put something on it?

He's prob going to die but just wondering if I can help him/her - ESP as it's been a tough ride for it

:D:D I'm so happy! After all the trauma I currently have 5 out of 5 chicks in the incubator fluffing up and chirping nicely! I did not think the last one (now named blip due to the blip in his life!) would survive but he is standing up and holding his own currently - so right decision to step in - thank you x

I'm not stir enough to believe that's it alls fine but it's a pretty good start!I can now sleep tonight x

People say hatching chicks is addictive but I don't think can deal with the stress! I absolutely love these chicks (I hope they are more girls) but boy was it stressful! Here's hoping Sunday/Monday (last egg hatch) is easy!

Thank you all and enjoy your chicks - I will x

Really pleased for you.

I helped one of my Pyle Dutch about 8 weeks ago who looked as though they wouldn't make it. I t was tiny and I had to straighten its toes as it struggled to walk. She is now a fabulous healthy girl.

Sometimes it is worth the risk stepping in but best to leave it as long as possible.

Good luck with the next one. :)
