Our quail arrived!

Recommended Posts

we took the plunge and now are the owners of a (green eglu) and 8 quail. They are very friendly and my 5 year old daughter has been able to pick them up - something I never thought she would want to do.

They laid 3 eggs yesterday - but 2 of them got eaten by the quail straight away...

They have not really discovered the eglu yet, but they love the grass.

So far so good :) I can't stop watching them

they should be fine on layers, they will just get used to them. or you can seek out garvo quail mix, but it's expensive and I have found it difficult to find. MammaT on here very kindly got me some, but I cant say it made much difference to the quail - chooks loved it tho, so much so that they broke into the bag!

Thanks for that, am I spoiling them by grinding it for them? :anxious:

personally I wouldnt bother, they will scarf it down when hungry!!

Another question should I move the run around regularly? They are on grass...how often should I move it...would it be better on bark where I can replace and refesh the bark?

you will find that the grass eventually gets a bit muddy and poo-ey, in which case you can move it somewhere else if you have space. bark is ok for them too, but make sure that whatever surface they are on nothing can dig underneath and get them out that way (or them escape that way).

4 eggs today!!!!

hoorah!

what mine REALLY love is a sand bath - I use playsand in a plastic tray, sometimes bung in a bit of diatom to help keep any parasites down. seeing 4 quail at a time squeezing in and having a good old splash about is lovely!

I'm also finding that mine are drinking a LOT at the moment - like a complete bunny bottle of water between 4 per day, so keep an eye out that they have enough.

our quail have never had a problem eating both layers pellets and quail seed, however, they seem to have really thrived since we started to feed them marriages quail pellets. I guess it also depends on what is readily available in your area.
