Snowy
Don't worry James, as long as the babies get a bit of protection now, it won't be long before they are bigger and can stand up for themselves. Also, once they start to lay, they will become much more confident!
The Dogmother
Hi Minty, and congratulations on your babies. Somewhere here is a topic on introducing new birds. The most inportant thing is to take it slowly, preferably using alternative accommodation for the newbies for the first few days, then letting them all freerange together when they are more used to each other. If you don't have another home for them, then I'd sugest making some hiding places in your run for the babies by propping some conifer branches in the corners, also provide extra feed and water stations so that the others can't bully them by excluding them from the food. Lovemychooks
I've had my rescued ex-battery hens for 5 weeks now and have had baby chickens in with them (the babies are 11 weeks old) since Thursday last week in their own separate run and house. I let the baby chickens out with my chickens last night and they are still getting used to each other and going into their own separate houses at night but i'm hoping it will all work out in the end. I think i'll let the baby chickens decide when they want to share my chickens house, I won't force the issue because I don't want them to be scared ! The Dogmother
That's the best way - if you are at all worried, be prepared to take a step back and seperate them again. Try putting the babies in with them at night then taking them out in the morning - that way, they are dozy in the evening, and then the newbies will smell of the others in the morning. There will always be a bit of fighting, which you have to be prepared for, but it's best not to stop them unless blood is drawn - stopping them delays the establishing of their pecking order.
