too many treats?

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I am asking a lot of questions and I just want to thank everyone again for helping this newbie out. I have ten three week old chicks who have become horribly spoiled. Every time they see me they want treats... and I confess I am a sucker for those little furballs. I only give them dried mealworms and once a day I give them some yogurt mixed with a little feed. It is not just yogurt but a special probiotic with lots of good bacteria. Anyway, their little crops sure do get full and they go crazy for both the mealworms and the yogurt... but am I giving them too much? Oh, and sometimes I also give them a little bit of hard boiled egg with their yogurt.. I just don't want them to gorge themselves. I mentioned in another post that they always dump all their feed everywhere so i'm kind of confused as to whether they are getting too much or not enough food!

My only worry is that if they're getting all these yummy snacks, they won't want their dinner! All chicks kick their dinner all over the floor, it's just how they like to eat it. I think they prefer eating off the floor to eating out of a dish because then they're more likely to pick up little bits of grit at the same time (obviously this won't happen in an incy but it's good practise for when they're grown up). I'd give quite a bit less than you're giving right now. To be honest, chicks don't need any treats at all, they get all the nutrition that they need from their chick crumbs. Maybe only give a few mealworms every other day, and save yoghurt and egg as an occasional treat, about once a week. Also, it might help if you feed them treats in the evening because then they've had the morning and afternoon to eat their proper food and they won't just eat the food that tastes best! :)

I'm afraid so. I wouldn't be giving them anything other than chick crumbs and water at the moment, tempting though it is to spoil them. They are still very young, and their chick crumb contains everything they need in the way of nutrients and, as LCL says, if you give them other goodies they will not eat the stuff they really need.
