poorly hen

Recommended Posts

I noticed today when opening the coop to our 3 hens that one was not as quick to come out as the others and when she finally came out she would not peck/scratch at the grass as normal. She was not even interested when i threw sweetcorn on the ground which is normally a favourite. All she wants to do is lay quietly although I did manage to get her to drink. Tonight the other 2 put themselves to bed but she had to be placed in the next box?? Any advice/ideas as i am really new to chicken keeping and these 3 were given to me by someone who no longer wanted them? I am wondering if it could be worms from reading the books i have. If she is no better in the morning we will ring the local vet but any help would be appreciated. ~Thanks

Hello, and welcome to the forum, sorry to hear that you have a sick hen.

If your hen is not interested in food or drink, and not looking 'busy' then there is something wrong. Unfortunately, hens are very good at disguising their symptoms and often by the time you see them looking ill they are really very unwell.

Do you know how old these hens are? What are you feeding them?

A hen that's about to lay a soft-shelled egg may look quite off-colour, nut usually only for an hour or so, and once they have passed the egg they perk up. If she still looks poorly this morning, then I'd recommend a trip to the vet. They should be worked every 3-4 months, but I'd wait till you have got this hen sorted out before you do that.

Well she was no better this morning and we have taken her to vets. Lizzy was running a high temp so she has had an antibiotic injection and we have more antibiotics to put in her water today. gotta keep close eye on her and if necessary take her back tomorrow. At present she is settled in our upstairs bathroom wit her water and a little feed in case she perks up. Hopefully she will.

thanks for your advice Olly & Plum. Olly we believe she is 18 months to 2 years old and she is being fed layers mash which was recommend by a local farm which supplies poultry products.

Thanks, hopefully by the end of the day she will have picked up a bit. We have only had them a couple of months but we have worked out all their characters and they are part of the family now. We call my daughter, who is nearly 8, the chicken whisperer as she can pick them all up without any problem and Lizzie loves sitting in her lap being made a fuss of.

Really sad news lizzie died this afternoon after hours of syringing water with more antibiotics in it. Have 2 very tearful children at the moment. We have buried her in the garden and both children have put flowers in with her.

On the bright side our other 2 chickens Rosie and Amber are happily scratching around the garden with no symptoms of their own thank goodness. Chicken coop thoroughly cleaned in the hope if it was anything catching they will stay clear.

Thanks for all of your support

So sorry to hear that, but at least you have the comfort of knowing you did everything you could for her. Hens are not the most robust of creatures, and it's likely she'd been ill for a couple of days, but hiding it well. It's very likely that it was something peculiar to her, and your other two hens will be fine.
