My lovely OH has just bought us a cube!! - Update 19/08/11

Recommended Posts

It was an amazing price and real good luck! We'd just watched one go for a lot more than we wanted to pay on ebay and then spotted this one :D

We will be keeping the eglus (the silkies need to have a separate house anyway, we may put some pekins in with them at some point) the big girls will move to the cube and we'll use the spare eglu for intros ;)

I will most definitely post pictures - it's being delivered to us on tuesday (another stroke of very good luck - the seller is a courier!) I'm so glad we took this when we saw it - even if it doesn't get filled right away - the flexibility is great. And I think the red will look very smart :) even if it breaks my pink theme and clashes slightly! LOL

not so much a clash as a colour block - all the rage donchaknow

I'll have to do some strategic placement so it looks deliberate.

and so that my chicken feng shui is up to scratch

(pink eglu)(cube red)(pink eglu) ? :D

What's marketplace ? Is it like ebay ?

On omlet - if you go in the shop and go to look at eglus and cubes, when you scroll down sometimes they say that they're available in the 'marketplace' which is just a place for people to sell their things through omlet for a fee (like ebay but only buy it now, no auctions). :D

Well it arrived yesterday - it has the panels for an extension but we're missing a support arch (which wasn't mentioned when we bought it :( ) we built it last night and had to take screws and washers from one of the classic's runs to finish it as there were about 4 missing (integral ones, for the roof), so we're going to order those and try and find out from omlet how much the support arch for the extension will be as we're itching to extend it (the cube run doesn't seem overly bigger than the classic, especially with the ladder). I'm really pleased with the cube itself but the run panels are warped quite badly in ways I can't fathom to have happened... we'll need to get a mallet out and straighten them back up again, some of them aren't repairable though. It also didn't come with a glug and grub - but that's not an issue as we've got the pink ones from the classic to get by :)

What gets me is, had all of this been mentioned, I'd definitely still think the cube was worth the £450 we paid for it, for sure. But a little heads up about what extras we'd need to make it suitable (and even constructable, with regard to missing screws and supports) would have been nice!

Anyway - other than that little gripe which annoyed me a bit, I'm so pleased. The colour is great, the sturdiness and size of the coop are fab and Babs has mastered the ladder already - Margot is a bit fatter so her balance is off and she flaps about (quite amusing) but I'm sure she'll get the hang of it!

Looks great.I see what you mean about the panels. Never mind, as you say it was still worth the money even with the problems. I am sure omlet will supply you with the arch support. Hope your hens enjoy it! :)

I hope so! I wish I could put the extension on without it! I wonder how the previous owners managed it without it?

Perhaps its in their garage or somewhere and they havent realised they didnt give it to you, could you contact them to ask? :?

We've tried that, but the man's phone is off and the message says he's on 'annual leave' until some time in september. :(

Typical! Oh dear, how much is a replacement one from omlet?

Not sure, it's not listed as a spare on the website so will have to contact omlet on my lunch break and ask - I also want to ask about individual run panels as I don't need necessarily all sides replacing, but do need to replace the two that would be used for the extension - the panels we used were the best of the 4 we had (good job it came with an extension and gave us that choice) so the worst ones are lying on the ground awaiting their fate, whether we can bash them back into shape to be used or what... I don't know! haha. I reckon the run panels will be about £30 maybe? and the pole £20? Ouch.

Looks fab! I quite like the pink and the red together. I suppose they get the extra space under the house too which they don't get with the eglu.

aye, but the run going in front of the cube is only 1m, so you really only get about 2m x 1.5m space, which isn't much bigger than a classic - and my PP is a HUGE girl, I wouldn't feel happy putting more chickens in with them with that limited space. When I eventually get the extension up, I'll be putting a mezzanine level in for extra space :)

Sorry about the problems you are having, but I think it's probably still a bargain, despite the missing "bits"? :) I would have thought you could knock the run panels back into shape (they seem quite bendy when they're not attached) but it will probably be easier to do when you've go the missing "arch"?

I'm with you on the Cube run not seeming much bigger than the Classic, i've got a recon cube with the standard run and an extension which I'm in the process of building, but I'm already thinking I'd like to add an extra extension (though too expensive just yet), but it'll probably be better when I can put some perches in?

Good luck and keep us posted!
