Eggstravaganza
We have a sick chicken - poor old Ginger Spice! i noticed on Tuesday that she seemed to be sitting with her tail feathers high in the air and we only had 2 of the normal 3 eggs that day so I thought she maybe egg bound. She was still eating/drinking and still came running when i called her. On Wednesday my husband reported that she had spent most of the day in the eglu so again i suspected she maybe egg bound or even broody. By the time i got home from work all three were roosting. i left for work at 5.30am and it was still dark so didnt open the eglu. My husband reported midmorning that Ginger was not herself and hadnt even come over for any meal worms (she would normally break the 100m world record for them). When i got home she was just sat in the run and didnt come over. Posh and Scary were out and about. We took her up the vets and she said that Ginger had a temperature of 42 (should be 40 apparently). She is so lethargic and just wants to sleep all the time, or at least sit with her eyes shut. The vet said she didnt really know what was wrong and ruled out being egg bound or impacted crop - in fact she said the crop felt a bit liquidy. she has given her an injection and told us to bring her back at 9am but she also said that it is highly likely she won't make it through the night. i know you shouldnt have favourites but Ginger is the whole families favourite. She is such a character and so much friendlier than the other 2. She is/was also our best layer. She is in the cat box at the mo sleeping. She just stood up but it was only to do a v runny poo! Any suggestions welcome - we only got her in May so she is not v old.

My daughters hamster died at the weekend and now for Ginger. Comes with the territory of have lots of pets i guess. You love them to bits and then they break your heart! I have a poorly Gingernut Ranger at the moment.I think she strained herself laying an egg,the others started pecking her and made it worse. She seems abit better today. Just wish we know what was wrong with Ginger. So now we have to decide whether we stick with 2 chickens or get another 2 to go with them. I have a feeling Morehen disease may strike!!
