The Dogmother
How sad to hear that the great man is retiring with Alzheimer's. I'm not usually a country music fan, but his sublime voice and talent have always made him a favourite of mine (Wichita Linesman and Rhinestone Cowboy are favourites). The lyrics of this track off his last album are made all the more poignant by his condition. A great musician.
clootie
I liked him in the original True Grit.

sadietoo
A true end of an era for me too...I remember my dear old dad giving it large to Rhinestone Cowboy whilst doing the washing up .... ,so it's happy sad and poignant all at the same time! Margalot
It's sad, I heard about this a while back, apparently that's why he's doing his fare well tour. My DH loves country music, but Glen Campbell has never been on his playlist. I had never been into country but Glen Campbell is the only country music on my playlists. I got into him when he released the albums of cover songs a couple of years ago. I love his covers of sing by Travis and time of your life by Green Day. Radio 2 have been playing Ghost on a canvas too which is lovely, his voice is so soft and I just love it. Oh and the song grow old along with me, I think it was originally John Lennon? Could be wrong though, That was the first time I had heard that song, so beautiful. It makes me cry though.
yvonne
Heard a great program on Radio 4 about "Witchetaw (sp?) Linesman" and it reminded me how much I loved some of his stuff - how sad, Alzheimers is an awful fate (both my Mum and her Mum had it)
Valkyrie
I liked Rhinestone Cowboy - but I do have one of his albums. I liked him True Grit too. Even more sad was when I heard he wasn't very nice to his wife - and I mean horrible, sort of changed my mind after that. But I still liked his music though - he was rather talented.
