How many?

Recommended Posts

After my last post (which one - meaning the classic or go) we got a Classic from eBay. Have given it a good clean and now need to get my chickens.

As they will be in the run pretty much full time we were only going to get 2, however my husband has now suggested we get 3. I worry that they'll be too cramped but what do all you experience chicken keepers think?

I got a eglu and 2m run from Ebay in July and have since bought a 1m extension from Omlet. I suppose it depends on the size of your hens (I have a Goldline and a Light Sussex) and how much they get to free-range but I decided to have 2 (although I had considered 3). Having now seen the space and how they interact I am happy with my decision.

Will be getting the GInernut Ranger and Miss Pepperpot form Omlet. Also though on of each would make it easier for my children to tell which one was which.

Why do husbands have to go and poke their noses in at the last minute :D

Three is a nice number as if you lose one you arent left with a lone hen and have to deal with introductions of new hen/s early in your chook keeping days

I wouldnt have three in an Eglu run without adding the converter (which adds another metre)

If you are set on the 2m run I'd just get two chooks

Very rough guide is 1sqm run space per hen

Thanks, you've kind of agreed with what we've both said!

Think I'll stick with the 2 for now, if we like it we can always add and extension and get more.

I'm actually after th cube but may have to wait for that!

Just be aware that it's not just a case of sticking a third chicken in if you decide you want more. Introducing new chickens can be tricky. If I were you I would get the extension and 3 hens. You are likely to want more than 2 chickens and this would be an easier way to do it. And as Redwing says should one die you won't be left with a lone hen.
