quickcluck
At training this morning, Finley was being a very naughty boy!!! Rebelling after his big snip this week ... The lady gave me some cake to try, man he went mad! She said either tuna or salmon cake... anyone ever made anything for their pooches or offer any advice on making it? Thanks K
UKMARCH
Mine love liver cake, I use rice flour and avoid dairy so substitute these but it could be made with other ingredients. I also make biscuits with tuna or whatever left overs I have and they all go down well thats the great thing about dogs! Liver Cake 8 oz liver 6 dspn water or milk 4 oz plain flour 2 eggs garlic (optional) Mix all ingredients in a liquidizer, pour into swiss roll tin lined with baking paper and bake for 20 mins at 190. If you use a deeper tin I usually use a silicone roaster just cook it for a bit longer. I cut it up and freeze it too so I can always take some out later on. quickcluck
Hmmmmmmmm thanks, I will try this when my DH is about as i'm veggie and struggle with this sort of thing, but he will do it no probs. Is it smelly?
UKMARCH
It is a bit when its cooking but dogs love it and its a high incentive treat. You can make homemade biscuits with flour, veg oil, egg and liquid/stock if you can't stand to handle liver. You can make the liquid with a stock cube or add any leftover cooked meat blended/tin of tuna for a change. My YD loves to eat them and when I park the dogs she always wants to eat some and I'm sure people think I'm mad giving her dog biscuits! The Dogmother
I make liver cake as described above but using spelt flour. Mine go mad for it and a high value treat like that helps to keep their attention. Unfortunately they also love those ghastly pink frankfurter things; I slice them up into tiny (0.5cm) cubes and freeze them to use as required. quickcluck
Doggie frankfurters or hooman ones?
The Dogmother
Those vile Herta ones for humans; I hate any meat that's not free range but they do the job when I;m trying to train the hooonds.
quickcluck
Excellent. Thanks. They do veggie hot hors I wonder if they have the same effect he doesn't normally spit out veggie meat so but be worth a try. Plus I love em
moochoo
You make the tuna cake in the same way as the liver cake. Just replace the liver with 2 - 3 tins of tuna in oil (brine's too salty).
The Dogmother
Mine are partial to sardine cake
quickcluck
Well, I made it today! The smell Turned out OK, the tuna was in oil so it's fairly oily..... next time will either drain the oil or try and get in in spring water... he really liked it tho, and so did the chooks, made them run REALLY fast It's in the freezer now, ready to be defrosted! The Dogmother
I break it up into tiny pieces and then I can use it straight from the freezer. It's best when cooked to a 'leather' consistency.
quickcluck
2 good tips! I zapped it for 5 mins in the microwave, so maybe a minute or 2 more maybe required. I take it they don't mind it crunchy!!! I think i'll have to start wearing gloves for training as I hate touching anything being a veggie! The Dogmother
I bake it on a low heat in a lined baking tray, then turn it over when the top is cooked. It's easier to handle when it's harder. Remember to fed them less at mealtimes when you're giving a lot of treats.
quickcluck
lol, good advice.... have cut it into 1cm cubes, but will break them when using them. Less garlic powder next time I think
The Dogmother
I'd halve that at least - the taste is so strong that you don't need to give much. A good guide that someone once told me... 'if they need to chew it then it's too big'.
