For those who buy wood-OMG

Recommended Posts

Apart from being a lot  how much would there be in 2.0m³. Have found some cheapish but it looks like they will only deliver to the pavement. Now, DH works full time and they don't do Saturday deliveries so it would be up to me to move it all. DH thinks I've lost the plot even considering it as I'm not known for my upper body strength and of course I do suffer with neck and shoulder problems :?

We buy in 2 cubic metres to last a winter when necessary, but its supplemented with free/scavenged wood. Its a lot. If we are lucky it is delivered to the top of the drive, but this still requires *guesses wildly* about 20 trips for OH to load the wheelbarrow and push it heavily laden about 20 ft up a small flight of steps (on boards) where he deposits it in a big pile and I do all the bending and stretching to select logs in the right size order to stack them. I physically could not do the barrow pushing bit, it would take me twice as long as it'd have to be twice as light. As I have to work in a confined space I find the bending/twisting quite onerous too, so do be careful. Mind you I am the world's most feeble woman

I would pay a bit more and find someone to deliver on a Sat or ask how much extra to deliver and stack (but I bet that is more, its quite time consuming. About an hour for both of us I'd say, perhaps a bit quicker). No doing weekend deliveries is ridiculous.

Thanks both :)

Daphne, that sounds a nightmare. Was bad enough when we had a truck load of chipped wood delivered and we had to barrow it round to the back garden with no steps involved.

OT, but where I go for chicken feed it's the lady who does all the lifting whilst her DH tells her what to get. She's about 6 stone in weight and is 63  I struggle to move one of the 20kg bags a few feet.

I've never managed to pick one up  I think we are on the same wavelength!

Think we are Daphne :) Feeble strengthed women of Omlet unite-lol

Update: I've ordered the wood. Chosen a day I wanted, they'll ring me when they're near, will deliver it up the drive and gave me 10% off as well. :) The company is turfandstuff incase anyone else needs to buy some.

The answer to my question is it's a lot :shock:

Delivery arrived today but luckily I only work five minutes away. The parcel was at least 6ft high and luckily for me a male neighbour and his BiL were in to assist the delivery driver in helping to steer it up the drive on the pump truck. Otherwise it was going to have to go back as DH was running his machine at work and couldn't switch it off!

I've spent an hour and a half filling the second wood store we built this weekend and I'm not even half way down

 Well, you'll be well set up if it's a cold winter again!

I know :)

Eldest DD definately thinks I've lost the plot as we haven't even got the woodburner in yet :lol: I however know there's method in my madness as I've saved quite a sum by buying this amount whilst we had the cash available.

DH helped me move some more after tea and we rejigged the wood in the store we made the other weekend. Think there's still a quarter for me to move tomorrow but that's going in the garage.

Think I'll have to take some pics tomorrow to show you all-lol

Lovely :D All nice and new and neat and clean

PS its not sad at all - we get woodpile envy on holiday in cold countries....'just look at his woodpile.....'

Thanks Daphne and I think we'll start doing that as well :DBet I'm the only one who'll admit to sniffing it though. I just love the smell of sawn wood

I am moving house soon and am desperate for a log pile! Not taking the log store from this house, so will just have to pile up the logs at the new house.

Having a full log pile is a bit like having a full fridge! Makes me feel happy that all is sorted and organised for winter. Call me a squirrel!

I love the smell of sawn wood too, so you aren't alone.

Well I had the tree surgeons in on Tuesday to lop the eucalyptus so now i have even more wood  they kindly logged it up for me but it's on a separate stack so I remember to let it dry out for a year or so before I burn it.

I have about 5 or 6 pallets, some are of very sound construction so I'll create a log pile for those newly cut logs... then all I have to do is to sort the big pile at the end of the garden and get all the lengths of timber sawn up.

The good thing about it is that it's all FREE 8):D

I do agree about the warm and satisfying feeling of having a full woodstack - the first couple of years that I had my woodburner, I was constantly running out of wood and having to cut it up before I could burn it. With help from a friend, I finally managed to get ahead this year, I still have lots of wombled wood to cut up but the wood pile is full floor to ceiling, reckon I'll be ok till Jan/Feb since I only light mine on evenings or weekends when I am not going out.

I'm definitely a squirrel at heart. I wish my fridge was as full (and as tidy)!

I'm still pining for a log pile like abwsco's.

Hopefully you'll be able to have one soon fellow wood sniffer  . DH has decided he's going to make another log store as he doesn't want a pallet with wood on in the garage. This from the man who couldn't see the point in making one

:lol: he's an addict too now!

Yep  We did make another one this weekend. Plus, he wasn't happy with the roof he made for it so as he's off work this week he's re-done it today. Tomorrow he is making a hinged roof for the biggest log store as he thinks the tarpaulin I've put on top of it looks messy

I love him to bits but he doesn't half do my head in at times

I bought mine for this year in March after our first winter with not quite dry wood. Helps that I reproofed the woodshed too. We bought 3 cubic metres, so we might run out but at a push we can burn some of the wood from the trees we felled in the spring. I made my brother put up a second shed for the wood from the trees. I also made my other brother move the wood from our drive, through the garage and down to the bottom of the garden. It took him three hours. I did forgive him a debt though ;)

Don't forget that newly felled wood needs to dry out for at least a year before you can burn it

Is this mega important? I know it doesnt burn too well but in times of desperation once we've got the fire going we have used unseasoned wood...is this bad

It'll shoot resin up your chimney; this can leak through the chimney structure and stain the walls inside your rooms. For this reason, unseasoned wood can also cause chimney fires.

I stack and rotate my wood; I've just had a tree trimmed very hard and the resulting wood logged up - it is at the back of the woodpile now, drying out
