Chicken Kitty
I hope this doesn't sound crazy.....but do chickens display different behaviour in Autumn months!? I have noticed that our girls behaviour has changed over the last couple of days...... We have....Sussex bantams - Clover aged 33 weeks, Violet aged 32 weeks and Marigold aged 26 weeks. Clover came into lay 4 weeks ago, we are still waiting for Violet and Marigold to lay! We have never had any problems inside the or run and free ranging has been fine, but now everytime we let them out Violet and Marigold 'size up' to each other, feathers around there necks all rufffled and jump at each other.....I had assumed it's because Violet is 'head hen' and now Marigold is growing up and becoming more confident....but it's suddenly crossed my mind that could either be a boy hence the lack of eggs and behaviour.....but we'd know by now....wouldn't we?? Also since she started laying we have had an egg from Clover every day without fail. She has spent alot of time sitting in the over the last couple of days, and has not layed today .....When I turf her out she carries on with her normal chickeny stuff....eating, drinking, she looks well and her comb is bright red......could she be broody or is it that egg production slow down in the autumn and she just wanted to be inside out today!? Oh how I wish I knew more about chooks! ....Please give me some expert advice!!! Thank you!
coco
My young pullets square up to each other occasionally, they are just sorting out the pecking order. Hens also do this when introducing new ones. Clover could be going broody although egg production is slowing down now, I had two today from nine layers. My araucanas stopped about three weeks ago. Purplemaniacs
I found that when mine (hybrids) came into lay it affected the pecking order and there was some falling out again and then things settled down until another started to lay.
