Good nature advice required please

Recommended Posts

I posted last week i have a chicken that isnt 100% and it turns out that she may have an arthritic hip (???)

She is living in the kitchen at the moment (no ideal) while is on medication. She is an exbatt but she is also getting picked on quite a bit and she isnt fighting back, she is looking a bit thread bare...

if her hip doesnt imporove then the cube isnt going to be any good for her, we are possibly looking into getting a go or a classic (this is also a debate...)

If and this is a big IF we do decide to get her a go/classic i want her to have company. she is so well natured i dont want to risk bullying. so was thinking bantams, silkies or medium sized chilled out chooks.

advice please

I think more experience people will be along soon but how about a couple of Frizzles or a couple of Silkies? You probably need to get two in case your little ex-bat is not long lived, but if they were a very good natured breed they should not pick on her at all. Both Frizzles and Silkies can come in standard (ie. larger size) but the smaller ones are more available and if you go for 'as big a small one as possible' which is what I've always done, then they are not that small - considerably larger than Pekins for instance.

My three ex batts live in a !gogreen! and my origianls live in (cube green) They all spend the day together and free range together. Come dusk they know where to go. Maybe one day they will attempt the ladder and I may find 9 in the (cube green) nest box. Why dont you get two more batts. If you contact the BHWT and see if you could foster two more with special needs :!: Dont quote me but I am sure they help with medical costs.

thank you for replies so far. I was thinking about more ex batts but the other exbatt has become a bit of a bully, she is second to bottom of the pecking order, which means agnes (poorly chook) gets harrassed by Myrtle quite a bit. I think its her way of saying at least i can pick on you....

I wouldnt mind special needs, i just want agnes to get a bit of peace without getting picked on

A nice laid back bantam would be nice, Wyandottes are very docile as are Orpingtons, Silkies would be another good bet. I'd steer clear of Pekins as they can be feisty!

Unfortunately as much as you try to get things right you sometimes do get a bird that is a bully in any breed really so it may not pay off 100% but its a good plan

** deep breath** got the ball rolling now. Have almost bought a classic from a fellow omleteer - just need to part with the money.

I have also emailed an enquiry for a couple of silkies. I do think Anges wont ever be a fully fit chicken, I have just paid for another inection as her last one has just worn off and she is very hobbly. I am just convincing myself i am not insane to go to all this expense for one chicken....

I don't want to be a harbinger of doom, but given that you are worried about the additional expense are you sure Agnes will be around long? As well as the additional expense don't forget that an additional Eglu will mean additional cleaning etc. so if you are really not certain could you perhaps ask your vet how long he thinks you'll have with Agnes. If it is not long then she might just be happy with you for company in the kitchen.
