williamspencer98
Which breed to buy?!!
sparkysmum
I have a salmon faverolle and an araucana. They couldn't be more different Salmon Fav is big, gentle and kind ( she spreads her wings at night so other hens can snuggle in ) Lavender araucana is my "evil hen" she is positively nasty to the bantams and any other incomers. She does lay the most beautiful blue eggs thou' & this is literally her saving grace. Funnily enough she is scared of my feisty little pekin who is less than half her size No knowledge of the other breeds at all , sorry. Minnie&Moose
Our cochin is a big softy - she also likes to tuck her friends in under her wings at night. Even when she's broody she's sweet-natured. Don't know anything about the other breeds though.
PeckyBeak
I have had all except the Cochin which I believe to be quite docile. my Araucana was quite low down in the pecking order and a quiet girl, the Brahma doesn't take prisoners, but only due to her size and if challenged, otherwise she is a softy. My Favorolle is called Joy, because she is a Joy. Why choose, get one of each.
Redwing
Favs, Cochins and Brahmas are all big chooks so a reasonable size coop will be needed, they are all gentle giants apart from the Araucana who is the odd one out Apart from Cochins they all come in miniature (bantam) size so that may be a consideration (nearest thing to Cochins in a small size is the Pekin)
PeckyBeak
Good point from Redwing, but you may be disappointed with the egg size if you go for bantams. Both Araucana's I have had have been ok with others, but every chook is different. If it is blue eggs that you want, you could go for a Cream Legbar. They are bigger than an Araucana, quite friendly and less skittish. Have great fun choosing.
Mercedes55
We had a Salmon Favorelles until we lost her to Myco earlier this year. Have to say they are the most gorgeous girls, so friendly and tame. We also have a Lavender Araucana, much smaller and quite potty, not at all friendly either. Mind you our Cream Legbar is quite similar as well as being as mad as a box of frogs
sparkysmum
A photo of Fav & Pom (araucana) when they were little. Fav is much heavier now & pom just looks older They've been together since they were tiny.
kelloggs
I have brahmas and faverolles and both are very friendly, the faverolles are very cheeky and do chat a lot. My brahmas are just so docile and love cuddles and I wouldn't be without them but then I am addicted to them......................
Goosey Lucy
My two Araucanas were nuts. Completely skittish and would run from their own shadows. But they laid the most beautiful and talked-about eggs
Margalot
I love my Brahmas to bits! So friendly and big gentle chatty busybodies! They are so nosey
Griffin
I have three Gold Brahmas and a Blue Partridge Brahma. They are BIG ladies! Lovely to cuddle but the size of a dog They're quite lazy hens in that they don't dig much or destroy things, they do enjoy their food and do go broody regularly. Salmon Favs are lovely hens, very quiet and docile. Mine is still very young and skittish, can't wait for her to settle down and enjoy cuddles. My last one loved to sit on my lap but I lost her with a prolapse
Duncan08
Well I have been reading this with great interest as I am looking to add a couple of Purebreeds to my 3 hybrid girlies next spring. It's not helping - I want them all
craftyhunnypie
I'm all for the Cochins here - such docile frilly knickered birds. I really miss my gentle giant (boy). I do love the Favs though! Emma.x
Chortle Chook
If I was allowed biggies, which I'm not - boo hoo - I'd go for one of each. I thought that the Araucana would have been the odd one out till I saw sparkysmum's pictures. The salmon looks just gorgeous with the lavender !! I don't envy you having to choose between those breeds.
