Spinning Top
I've seen a number of references to giving the girls porridge for breakfast when the weather gets really cold. Sorry to be thick but should I use normal / human oats (Tesco finest with fruit and nuts knowing my girls' luck), cheapo porridge oats / oatbran or layers mash? Also, do I mix it with water or milk? Thank you! Scrambled, Fried, Boiled, Poached (Still waiting for the others) Edited November 22, 2011 by Guest
whoopsie
I used to make mine a mash with ordinary porridge oats mixed up with some layers pellets, raisins and leftover chopped up veg. It smelled disgusting but the girls loved it. Use hot water not milk!
Christian
I use their pellets and add boiling water and frozen sweetcorn. Allow it to cool and then mix it up. You can give porridge oats, but the normal feed is better for them as it contains everything they need.
HappyhenSG
I use normal porridge oats and make it with water, adding a few raisins and a pinch of poultry spice - it barely touches the sides
gongladosh
I just use normal cheapy porridge oats with warm water and my girls will move mountains on a cold morning to get to it...
mollyripkim
Last winter my girls had cheap porridge oats mixed with warm water just before bedtime and they loved it. In my head I felt better for them having something warm at night and I also wanted them to fill up on their pellets in the mornings. Might try making it with pellets this year. Bramble
Pellet porridge works great for me, the girls like it quite "sloppy", I add some bokashi and maybe a few mealworms or a bit of corn, but not always, and whatevers in it, they go MAD for it!! Smudge
Through the really cold period last year I just mixed up some of their layers mash with hot water to make a 'porridge' first thing each morning - it never lasted long and they were getting something nice and warming that was giving them everything they needed as it was their proper food anyway. I think that's one of the reasons why I prefer the mash to the pellets as it seems a bit more versatile.
Chook n Boo Mum
I always have a sack of pellets for dry eating and mash for wet eating........in the summer they are shut in with a serving of wet mash at tea time about an hour before dusk..........in the winter they have wet mash at lunchtime on workdays as dusk is so pesky early, and teatime on nonworkdays.....when the weather closes in & is throughly cold & nasty they have it for breakfast too............they see it as a treat, little do they know If they are moulting, then some rinsed tinned fish can be added.......stand back as they realise or they will knock you on your back in their increased enthusiasm to get to the bowls.........sometimes they have extras added, raisins, wheat, corn, poultry spice, garlic, bokashi & other goodies.......when it's really cold or they're indoors & poorly they might get a bowl of ready brek...........crumbs, no wonder my critter sitters like me to write out their instructions Of course they do have pellets available at all times
Spinning Top
Blimey Chook n Boo Mum, I thought my girls were spoilt! Thanks ever so much to all of you, I'll try some of your suggestions when it chills off.
percy049
My dad sometimes gives them shreddies (that's the normal ones, not the chocolate ones!) with warm water when he gets up to let them up
Treacle
After reading this I gave my girls some warm porridge! OMG!!! They went wild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Dogmother
Mine get the dregs left in the feeder at the end of the eek. I just add a bit of warm water and they wolf it down. Be aware though that if you feed them stuff apart from their pellets/layers feed, that they will gain weight and stop laying.
Chook n Boo Mum
Spoilt? The Wild girls? Never That's why they get mash Clare, proper food, they just think it's treats ....... none of mine are tubsters...some are quite the opposite tbh, but they are never still & constantly in trouble ( I think you probably know which 4 I refer to ) which probably explains it
The Dogmother
I was more worried about those getting a whole banquet of oats, Ready Brek and other hooman stuff Sha. Bit like feeding dogs on sponge cake - they'd love it (of course ) but it wouldn't do them any good.

Spinning Top
Had to give it a go before bed time today - mug of layers pellets, small handful of corn, a few mealworms and a few raisens. Very well received indeed!!! Thanks to all.
