marky mark
that you could tell people new to keeping hens - what would it be??? Mine - as a fairly novice hen keeper would be - be careful as you will never be satisfied with just 3 hens!
Twiglet
Don't think you're odd if you look at them and think... HELP, I'm not sure I can do this. You'll soon get the hang of it ( with forum help) and then there's no stopping you.
Couperwife
ignore the people who look at you strange. there is always another one round the corner who thinks it is a fab idea

Egluntyne
Be prepared to become addicted to the forum! And to become totally besotted with the hens. Him Indoors complains that you have to have feathers to get any attention at Egluntine Towers.
craftyhunnypie
Do what I do & kick the boxes of battery eggs in the supermarkets! I've done this very recently.. I have literally opened boxes and thrown the eggs at the back of the shelves until they smashed. Naughty aren't I? Well I'm not really because some poor chicken has been forced to lay those eggs and kept in disgusting conditions. I just wonder when I will get arrested???? Would it be an offence? SO if you are new to keeping chickens everyone please do the same - bash in the battery eggs! Oh & if you can rescue some battery girls. I plan to in the distant future! bronze
Problem is they supply to the (sad) demand So will just push the demand up on the chickens by doing that
craftyhunnypie
But I feel so much better after bashing the battery eggs! Unless we all do a rescue - they will lay on demand for the rest of their lives. Poor luvvies. (note to self - rescue some girlies soooooon). beach chick
that 4 chickens is not enough either... that you will want to take over the world and turn into a missionary for proper eggs! that you will find out things about the battery trade that horrify you more than anything you already knew (eg the enforced moult via food and water deprivation) that chooks are good for the soul! Emma.x Emma, Yes you are naughty, you are posing a potential health hazard to people who may not be as enlightened as you, and those who are,(decomposing food stuffs behind shelves etc) by doing this you are not actually acheiving anything other than broken eggs. Smoking is banned in this country as of the July 1st. This was not acheived by people going into newsagents and stomping on fag packets. Yes I smoke, Yes I agree with the ban, Yes I agree with freedom of choice, No I don't agree with pointless actions which only annoy people who can't afford to make a choice and only have broken eggs to choose from. Not to mention the poor underpaid souls who have to clean it up! And yes I am sorry for the the above rant. But surely raising awareness would work better. Kev. craftyhunnypie
No no worries! It didn't sound harsh, it just made me realise that bashing them aint the way. Perhaps pictures of suffering chickens stuck onto the shelves may hit home more, without causing unnecessary damage & making other people clean up my mess. Big apologies on my behalf! I'm just getting upset about the whole prospect of battery hens lately & pray that one day ALL chickens will live the life they deserve ( a respectful one) as I love my chickens so much - they help to brighten my day when my days not a good one. A forum is a place where everyone can voice their opinions - if we didn't then there would be no point of a forum as it would be very biased towards all the good points & no bad points. Hope that makes sense. We are all allowed rants as that is what makes an ace forum. Emma.x

Hen Watch
"One thing that you could tell people new to keeping hens - what would it be???" I agree with Couperwife and Egluntine....Chickens are addictive, this forum is addictive, family and friends think you are nuts or eccentric (don't know why though they are just pets after all). Also your attitude to where food comes from changes so "rants" are understandable. What about a supermarket that doesn't sell battery eggs? http://www.waitrose.com/food_drink/foodexpertise/dairyatwaitrose/eggsatwaitrose.asp
