Gloss-Hen
Am really cross at the moment as I went to a medic because i get really lightheaded and I told them I was taking glucose Tablets. They said to me "why are you taking glucose tablets they are only for people with diabetes" I told they that my mum recommended them to me. So they said something along the lines of " if your doctor has not told you to use them and your taking your mothers advice against your GPs" and she made my mum sound so stupid and she's insulted my mum before. Thank you for reading Rant over
Chucky Mama
They way that they worded it may well have made you feel cross but I do have to agree that you should not be taking glucose tablets - sorry, no offense intended to you or your mum. You will be getting a very quick hit of glucose and a 'sugar high' that will shortly be followed by a crash. It is not a good dietary supplement unless you are diabetic. Taking them without being advised to by a doctor is not to be advised. You are much better eating something like a piece of wholemeal bread, a banana or some dried fruit and nuts rather than pure sugar if you need a boost. Space Chick
If your doctor had told you not to use them, different story... But your doctor hadn't said anything either way Show me a woman that hasnt followed her Mums advice, and I'll be astounded Bad doctors Ignore them, I would
kazmac
Agreed - you should really only be taking glucose tablets if there's a medical reason for taking them (no offence intended towards anyone, and I know your mum's only got the best intentions). However sometimes medical staff are not the most diplomatic! Can I ask, though, why you're taking them? Is is because you're feeling light-headed and think your blood sugar is low? Or are you getting light-headed after you've taken them? Either way, your GP should be investigating further, tbh. You really want to find the cause of the light-headedness, especially if it's happening often.
majuka
I remember taking glucose tablets when doing a lot of walking for my DOE awards at school, I think most of our group were taking them to give us extra energy. I think a number of people who do sports use them. Is it any different from drinking the lucozade energy drinks?
Gloss-Hen
I agree do agree with people who said I shouldn't be taking it unless I'm dietbetic but I only bought it to see if it helps
Mercedes55
I had no idea that they shouldn't be taken unless you are diabetic. My mum, who is 88, takes them quite a lot. She seems to believe they give her energy, which I keep on telling her is daft as they are just sugar and she will get a high followed by a low, but like most mother's she doesn't take any notice of me When I was at the endodontist on Monday having a root canal done I was given a glass of Lucozade to drink before the treatment as I wouldn't be able to eat for a few hours afterwards and she said it would help me
Chucky Mama
You might find this interesting. It explains things much better than I can "Our bodies are designed to get glucose from from natural foods such as fruits vegetables, grains and even fat. Our metabolism creates the glucose gradually from those raw materials when we need it. If you eat glucose, you are dumping it straight into your blood at once which can cause massive swings in your blood sugar levels. This may bring about emotional disturbances, hyperactivity, obesity and eventually type 2 diabetes. Eating natural whole foods gives you a stable blood sugar level which is ideal for good health. The only time it is good to eat/drink glucose is if you are in urgent need of sugar, eg after prolonged hard exercise, if very weak from diarhoea and vomiting, or a diabetic going into insulin shock." If you are getting light headed Gloss-Hen, glucose tablets are not the way to go. You need to speak to your doctor, you could be anaemic perhaps, or there may be dietary changes that you can make that will improve things. Glucose could be making things worse by causing blood sugar swings.
Lavenders_Blue
Have you had your blood pressure checked? Low blood pressure can cause lightheadedness/dizziness/faintness. It's really quick and easy to find out what your blood pressure is - ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.
Gloss-Hen
Thanks for all the advice I have had my eyes checked today and that may have something to do with that
Valkyrie
DD took glucose tablets when she was doing competitive swimming. Having just been on a course of blood pressure tablets - the adjustment made me very light headed when it dropped down. Sometimes having ear problems can make you feel odd. I'm just odd at the best of times! Good luck tracking down the cause.
craftyhunnypie
We don't do doctors unless extremely ill, which is very rare. Last time was aged 14 and a half with appendicitis!
