Probably the world's unluckiest chicken keeper :(

Recommended Posts

hotchick Just a thought but are you absolutely certain you have to get rid of Rosey? My sister lives in East London and it is so noisy where she is what with sirens going and kids rushing about and garden machinery that I don't think a cockerel would be noticed. If it was me I'd wait for the first complaint - that is - unless you happen to hate the crowing yourself.

Hi Hotchick, I have a cockerel that was bought as a hen, luckily he is only small and doesn't make to much noise so he is staying for now until the neighbours complain. I have a hen that makes more noise than he does. Could you not keep Roy and see how things go. I'm sure your girls will start laying soon, I have 25 hens and get on average 3/4 eggs a day although they are pure breeds so have stopped for the winter. Its only my bantams laying. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you. :)

Hi Hotchick I used to live in Goodmayes Ilford Essex which is east London and I got my first 4 gilrs from Smilers Farm, Pound Lane, Wickford, Essex. SS12 9JS in Sept 2010. Athough the address say Wickford It is off the A127 on the way to Shouthend. I used my TOM TOM. I was able to choose different colours. I did loose one later that year and the vet couldn't find what was wrong with her and she had to be PTS. The other three were all healthy with no creapy crawlers. In Feb 2011 I got two more girls from not such a good breeder IMO . It was dark when I collected them and I was unable to check them over properly. The advice on inroductions was incorrect and they were covered in beasties. It cost a fortune as all 5 birds had to be treated. OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I was aslo trying to sell and buy a new home and work so it was very tressfull  I moved to Norfolk Aug 2011 with all 5 girls and I still have them I increased my flock with 3 ex batts and accidently rehomed a cockerel  so I have 9 now in total. I am getting between 1 and 5 eggs a day at the moment. Although I live in a vilage they are quite close to houses. I told all my neighbours to tell me if he was a nusence but so far so good. I do recomend Smilers and if you keep your boy for the time being he will help with the introductions. If you still love the idea of chicken keeing hang on in there. If you look at my signature you may be able to understand the dates better. I still have a lot to learn and am no expert I can only give you my experience. :D Let us all know how you get on. Good luck. :D

Alis girls - thanks for the info about your Totteridge seller. I actually have family in that neck of the woods so could combine a trip. I'll be sure to take up your kind offer of checking availability rather than just turn up in the hope they've some in stock. x

Cheeky chook - i can see how you got that name! I'm still smiling at your comments and suggestion, and it's not actually not that bad! Will certainly not allow the seller to get away with taking some responsibility for the situation (at the very least I'm owed an apology), as my intention was clear prior to purchase was very obviously for hens. But all this advice has given me a certain kind of courage. I'm going to hang on to in there with Rosey-Roy for as long as I can - I like hearing his wake up call :D What the neighbours think will be another story....

Cheers Chicken Shack - Nicola O, mentioned Smilers too and I got the impression that they are a lot more reputable than their nearby competition. Definitely one to keep in the address book. Very unfortunate that you weren't so lucky with your second lot, although your perseverance did pay off eventually AND you're geting eggs, not something alot of us can brag about at the moment. Thanks for sharing your experience with a fellow novice :D
