The different feather patterns

Recommended Posts

I'm still trying to get to grips with the names for all the different feather patterns. The books I've found just show an individual feather for any given pattern and not what you see on the overall hen. If anyone knows of a book that really shows the different patterns I'd love to know what it is as I could do with it in my reference library. . . or failing that please post a pix of any differently patterned chook you may have.

I've been trying to think of all that there are and have so far come up with: millfleur, barred, cuckoo, splash, chamois, lemon, . . . do please add to the list for me. If we got a good list then perhaps it could be made into a sticky for general advice

Oh wo

I'd been wondering exactly what a partridge is :( I had sort of decided it must be 'neck one colour and body another' but then what is a typical black and white Sussex or a typical brown and black Vorwerk :anxious:

I have a chamois Poland and in the picture books a black and white version of her is called a 'silver laced' so is my Chamois Poland actually a 'buff laced'?

Talk about confused.com

Different shades of buff are called different things - lemon and chamois are shades of buff

So your Poland is a chamois laced

To confuse you even more the laced varieties are called different things - buff, silver and gold laced refer to the background but blue laced refers to the lacing

The white with black neck classic light sussex type feathering is called light in Sussex and Brahma, Ermine in Faverolles and Columbian in Wyandottes

Sometimes its best not to think too hard about it
