hillfamily
I know some of you sell your surplus eggs and I was just wondering how much do you sell them for 2 of my neighbours would like to buy some of my surplus eggs .....we currently get between 24 - 27 eggs a week.....so any ofers to buy some are gratefully received as I'm starting to have far more eggs than we need. (8 months ago we only had 2 chooks, now we've got 8 chooks ) It took me a little by surprise and so I hadn't really thought about price. I said probably about £1.00 for a box of 4 and £1.50 for a box of 6. Your ideas and or prices please
Jaime
I've been thinking the same prices for my excess eggs. But then I think that might be a bit overpriced compared with what you see at farm gates and some markets etc. There again I think compared to Tesco's best free range organic at about £1.80 for half dozen it's a good price. I end up giving most of my extras away to family and friends anyway I'd never make a businessman
feemcg
I give my surplus eggs away - I hand them out to neighbours and colleagues and only 1 has ever offered me any money. I'm not into chicken keeping to make any money but I do think its a bit cheeky and in their position I would always at least offer. One of my 'closest' neighbours gives me a bottle of wine every couple of weeks so I don't mind giving to them at all .
hillfamily
Thanks Jaime and Fee...................i also just give them away but my neighbours are insisting that they want to buy them as they think they are the best eggs they've ever had and would like to have a box or two on a regular basis. I looked online at Ocado and their organic free range eggs range for about £1.50 to £2.20 depending on size. Seeing as based on the 'industry official egg sizing' all my eggs fall into the large/extra large size and my purchasers can in fact meet the chook who laid their egg and even give it a cuddle if they want, I felt that it was probably quite a reasonalbe price I'm also going to donate 50% of what I'm given to the BHWT The other 50% will go towards the girls their treats
Couperman
We have been giving our extras away to friends and family on a get the first box free type arrangement. We agreed a quid per half dozen after that. We will give our adjoining neighbours theirs for free, as they are lovely people and we would like to keep them that way! Like Jaime said it isn't about running a business but the few bob gained will keep us in chicken feed. Everyone is happy We worked out what our eggs cost to produce taking account the cost of the cube etc. It's currently about £13.84 per egg but falling daily!! and worth every penny Kev. Egluntyne
I give mine away to friends, neighbours, colleagues and family. I'd be too embarrassed to talk about money! I'm like royalty in that regard. Like Fee I didn't go into chicken keeping to make money so I've been lucky because I've been given several bottles of wine, my neighbour gave me a lovely blue bowl with chickens painted on it which was quite unexpected and really kind of her. Oh...and a colleague gave me a shrub which is now in my back garden.
Olly
likewise - I give mine away, friends have to be on a strict rota as to whose turn it is! Since these are the same lovely friends who clubbed together to buy me the Eglu, I'd feel to take money for them! They have offered however, and when I get my extra chooks in the autumn and (hopefully) have more eggs per week, I've said I would take a donation to charity. I think the prices you've suggested sound reasonable, . Where's Martin B - he's a proper little entrepreneur and sells his eggs, I'm sure he knows what a box of six is worth! Egluntyne
these are the same lovely friends who clubbed together to buy me the Eglu, WOW!! What super friends!!
Olly
I am VERY very lucky! and it was totally unexpected. I was so surprised and delighted I burst into tears. It was a housewarming present, and it was between quite a few of them, but it was very generous - and possibly the best present I've ever had! I have got a fantastic set of friends, so being able to give them free eggs is a real pleasure!
Lesley
Pam - I sell eggs. I sell them at £1.20 for 6, and the duck eggs I sell at 25p each. I think Martin sells his for more than I do. I have to sell some of our produce as we bought a farm with an Agricultural Tie - i have to be able to prove that my income comes from the farm. Cinnamon
Looks like I am underpricing - mine sell for £1 for a half dozen
Lesley
Is it you that has made the pretty labels for the boxes Sarah?
bellekatz
I sell mine for £1 a half dozen as well - still give some to good friends but on 5 a day we couldnt eat them all. People at school are queing up for them - put a list expecting about 1/2 a dozen staff names and got over 20 - everyone is raving about them! I just say thats how eggs are supposed to look and taste!! money goes to buy the girls food and treats.
Gallina
I can't see anything wrong in selling eggs at just under the price that the supermarket charge for free-range ones. (Just don't contravene trade descriptions by describing your eggs as free-range if your hens are kept in the run most of the time: that is not free-range.) I have never myself been in the happy position of having any eggs to sell: in the five months from January and May this year I had three eggs altogether (despite having three hens). With one of my new hens now in lay, this has gone up to about seven eggs a week, and when I am up to my full desired quota of twelve hens I am hoping for two boxes a day (but will probably be disappointed). If you were to cost your actual time, expense, and overheads, eggs should cost about £45 a box (or £100 a box if vets' fees have been incurred), but I don't think people would pay that.... Giving them away to deserving and appreciative friends is nice too. But I will have more hens than friends soon, so I expect to have some over. redfrock
I think we must be underpricing too! Andy sells his at work for 70p half dozen! The same as the chap who we bought the hens from. I just leave a jar on the table at work and people donate as much or as little as they want. I have a box under my desk with 4-egg and 6-egg sized boxes and I leave a dozen box open on the table and again people take as many or as few as they want. Close friends and family get them for nothing. Or people who help us out - like the electrician and the woman who gave us some extra freebie bits of wood towards our new hutches. We have found eggs always assist a smooth transaction
Cinnamon
Is it you that has made the pretty labels for the boxes Sarah? I did make labels, & had them on pretty pink boxes - but I am nearly out of them now, despite asking people to return them for refills I lso have nice blue & pink labels with palm trees on for when I am feeling summery. Egluntyne
Very pretty Cinnamon. Where do you get the pink boxes from again?
Tina C
You can get coloured boxes here http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/ We sell ours for £1.20 for 6 but reduce this to £1 if they bring their box back. Smaller quantities are simply 20p per egg. 'Layla's Little Nest Egg' is open, on the drive, at 10.00am on a Saturday morning and we did a doordrop to let our neighbours know. Layla gets 5p for every egg she sells, 5p goes to the BHWT and the rest goes towards food and treats for the girls. Its been a really good thing to do. Although we had been here just over a year we had not met some of our neighbours. We have now got to know some of them quite well. We have a few elderly neighbours and they like buying 2 or 4 eggs as they don't need more. We have our school fete and BBQ tomorrow so I am donating some to sell alongside the cakes. We also give some away to teachers, family, and people who have done us favours as required.
Jules.
I haven't sold any of my eggs- we are getting two laid every day now. I gave 4 to my next door neighbour this week, & 4 to mum yesterday, then last night Alexander's friend came for tea. They had 2 fried eggs EACH & Ethan had 1, so now I only have 2 eggs in my egg bowl I think I would need to get more chooks to justify having surplus eggs that I could sell
Cinnamon
I got my pink boxes on Ebay
hillfamily
Thanks everyone for the advice Sarah.........I love the labels for your boxes I've got pink egg boxes aswell
Charlottechicken
I sell mine for 50p for 4, or 75p for 6 as Brummies like things cheap (or cheep even! ) and I don't think they would be popular if they cost more. My girls lay big eggs too so they are a real bargain. However, this small charge only pays for food for the hens, and I always tell people this. I always ask for the boxes back as I have't got round to getting the girls to make these whilst they are sitting there laying eggs!
pekinpower
Our eggs sell for £1 per half dozen. I think it depends on where you live, we are very rural and just about everyone has chickens.
Martin B
I think Martin sells his for more than I do. Correct. £1.60 for 6!
redfrock
somebody at work asked for as many eggs as possible this week as she wanted them for a family do .... I gave her 21 eggs, she donated £1.20. I think somebody might have done rather well.....
