Food for invalids

Recommended Posts

My little one (10) ok not so little but hes my baby - woke up yesterday with a very high temp. Not been vomiting - just looks grey and miserable. Main thing is getting fluid down him - hes had water, tea and Schloer. he feels hungry but mouth is yucky.

Years ago if Downtown is too be believed he would have been pumped with Beef Tea or broth - neither of which I think I could stomach when I wasnt ill.

Hes had homemade soup and crackers and tea and biccies.

I can remember when I had measles I lived on beans on toast and tinned mandarin oranges when I had tonsilitis. Amazing on how times change - wondered what other mums give their family when they are ill.

Poor thing, hope he feels better soon.

Ice lollies sometimes do the trick around here. And sometimes a bowl of cereal but I think you have to fancy that when you're ill otherwise milk can make you feel a bit more yucky. Another drink that seems to hit the spot is squash made with sparkling water. You get the refreshing fizz but not the sickly sweet lemonade taste.

The only comfort food I seem to fancy when off colour is a crisp sandwich!

Xx

When I have had tonsilitis the only thing I can eat is very soft wheatabix.

Digestive biscuits are great when sickness is easing, they give you a sugar boost and line your stomach.

Otherwise anything warm and comforting cooked ny someone else.

Hope that your youngster is soon feeling better.

thanks - hes had a boiled egg and soldiers - I am so glad I am past toddler and baby stage when high temps meant oodles of washing as they always puked up. Thanks for good wishes.

Has anyone noticed the viruses going round this winter seem to last forever. Many pts and friends have complained of coughing for nearly a month. Need some could weather to kill off bugs.

I was ill a lot as a child, and frequently had tonsillitis/sore throat. I used to ask for a tin of babyfood - Heinz Tomato, Macaroni and Cheese was a favourite, I remember. Everything else was too scratchy. Now, if I'm feeling a bit under the weather, there is no substitute for Heinz Tomato Soup, with a slice of white bread - makes everything feel better.

I tend to go for pea and ham soup when I feel poorly ( otherwise known in my family as Umpa soup after my Dad who makes vast pans of the stuff) LMW prefers Tomato and basil soup ( and it has to be the fresh stuff not tinned).

As for your little one I would give him what he fancied ( within reason - spicy food would not be a good idea). I always go with a little of what you fancy does you good
