Bird netting

Recommended Posts

I want to buy/build some netting to keep my chickens to one part of the garden. Omlet do a very good looking piece of kit but it's £99.00.

I'm not too worried about the gate so how hard would it be to make my own using this and a few posts...?

Does anyone have any experience or tips?

I am afraid I went for the convenience of the omlet netting. You don't just get the netting, you also get the posts and tent pegs to tie it all down.

The netting that you have found looks fine though, if it is made to keep little garden birds off your veggies I am sure it will keep your chooks enclosed.

I have that netting, to protect my raised beds from squirrels & birds (chickens & the rest!). It's good stuff, strong, and it hasn't unravelled where I cut it, which I was a bit worried about.

It should be fine for what you want, if you get the posts, pegs, stakes etc done right.

I have posted this before but please be careful when using netting. My neighbours used netting to separate the newbies. Sadly one get her foot caught and as when they panic chickens tend to spin she got totally tangled up and broke her hip. That was bad enough, but what was horrific was that as she lay there injured the others pecked her and ate her. Luckily we had a key and as soon as we realised we ran round and cut her free, but as she lay in my arms the others were still trying to pull lumps off her. She died off shock, but what a horrible death.

I HATE netting with a passion now. Please be careful

if you are looking for a cheaper option have a look at these 2 web sites

knowlenets.co.uk -- for the netting

farmcareuk.com -- for the posts

i used them to section a part of the garden off so the girls could free range and destroy that bit of the garden and leave us some grass for us to cut in the summer :lol::lol:

We have the electrifiable poultry netting (Omlet previous netting, and also available from places like FLyte So Fancy) and the new (non electifiable) Omlet-specific netting. We've also bought some "cheap" netting (and the posts) as we needed something with smaller holes to keep the chicks in.

The cheap netting is OK, providing you are going to be pputting it up and then never moving it. It is a pain to move as there is no rigidity in it so it gets very tangled very easily,

Hope that helps.
