Poorly new Orpington

Recommended Posts

One of my new girls is poorly. She has a bubbly eye and nasal discharge, although appears fine in all other ways- eating and bossing etc. When I pick her up to put her to bed she is slightly gapey and wheezy but soon calms down. The other two see ok just now *fingers crossed*.

I have started her on baytril today but have been giving her nutridrops for a few days now. Some days her eye looks fine and no discharge but I want to be sure she is ok. Today her combe and wattles were going white coloured, so I brought her into the house. About 30 mins later I heard a racket from the room she was in and when I went in she had flown up onto the coat rack and was flapping around...At this point I decided that being alone inside was going to be too stressful for her so have put her back with the other two new girls. Ideally I'd like to have her separate, but the others have already been exposed (she came with the bubbly eye....) and seem ok, and I really don't want her immune system compromised further through more stress.

Her wattles now look the redest I have ever seen them after her little escapade.... Fingers crossed she gets better soon!

It sounds like mycoplasma to me. Did you take her to the vet to get the Baytril and, if so, what did the vet say? If she hasn't seen the vet, she needs to do so. Myco is infectious, and your other hens have obviously been exposed to it, so you will need to keep an eye on them too.

You say that the hen in question was like this when she arrived - I would get in touch with the breeder to let them know.

Sometimes the stress of the journey can bring on a bout of myco. That's what happened with my Rosie. My vet gave me Tylan soluble which I put in their water for a week and she was fine.

Just beware if you pick them up and they sneeze in your face :vom::lol: not nice.

Hope she gets better soon.

Tweety- I never took her to the vet as I felt it would stress her out even more. However, my vet has seen two of my older girls at various times and one of them had mycro in the past as well, or at least that is what we both felt it was. I talked to him on the phone about her symtoms and also when I went in to get the baytril, I am pretty sure that is what it is, so as I say, don't want to stress her further for him to just comfirm what I already know iyswim.

Henslaved-How funny, my girl is called Rosie too!

At the moment the other two girls are fine. Ideally I'd be keeping her in isolation, but with her getting so stressed inside and the others not having intergrated yet, this is my only option I feel.

I might call the breeder, but when I phoned him to find out the age of the girls he wasn't all that interested.... :(

When I first got my Milly (ISA Brown) home she had the same symptoms and the vet confirmed it was Mycoplasma. She had Baytril but did not respond. He did explain that about 25 % of chickens don't get better with Baytril and then gave us Tylan Soluble which is a powder you put in the water. She recovered in a matter of days and none of the other chickens ever displayed symptoms, so you may want to ask for that.
