Phantastic2001
Does anyone know if a red colored light will negatively effect my chickens in anyway? It cold here and I would like to use a light bulb to warm up the coop a bit and hopefully get them laying again, but the white light on during the night seems harsh to me. Your thoughts? Lewis
Where are you - UK? and how old are the birds? Theres no reason that they should need extra heat outside if the coop is insulated and not draughty. They have a feather duvet round them and a higher body temperature anyway ... plus they huddle together at night to keep each other warm
sparkysmum
I used a heat lamp a couple of years back in the run when it was minus 17, but not since. It really isn't that cold just now. A heat lamp will not affect their egg production one little bit. Having a white light on during the night is inappropriate for garden hens and unjust. Sorry. The days are slowly getting longer but the wait is frustrating I know. Alli x
Snowy
Whereabouts in the US are you, and how cold is it getting at night? If it's getting beyond -10 then some extra insulation of their coop may be called for. But the extra warmth will not affect laying, it's the white light, or daylight that stimulates egg production. In battery farms they are given extra light to keep them laying. Most domestic hen keepers don't bother as the break in laying gives them a well earned rest and diverts energy into refeathering after a moult.
