help me please - hen floppy & can't walk

Recommended Posts

fed my chooks as normal everyone fine no probs , come in the house and started washing up looking out the window to see my favourite volty a 6 month old ( if that ) silkie go from pecking away at a bit of fruit cake to not being able to walk just flopping about the place, meaning everone would decided t have a peck at her ,i have picked her up and brought her in , but shes being funny, she has her head tilted to the side and most of the time its completly upside down, shes managing t stand now but is walking round in circles and tripping over herself , is it just shock, as shes has always been timid or is it something more serious ? what is wrong what can i do for her

I wonder if she has had a stroke- I had similar problems with one of my frizzle bantams, and my avian specialist vet diagnosed a stroke or brain tumour.

I agree that she needs to see a vet and, in the meantime, separate her from the others. There's not much else you can do by the sound of it.

Good luck :(

i have been doing some research on the internet , and alot of people sem to think it could be from a nasty peck to the head , and could be either temporary or permenant , many also seem to think it could be mareks disease. i never saw anyone peck her initally , but dosent mean to say they didnt they appeared to only peck her once she was acting funny , mainly getting her bum i will keep her quarentined for today and see how she goes, shes still eating and drinking, so thats got to be a good sign ...... right ? but if theres no change by tommorrow then off to the vets i go

just as it came........... it went, very strange, ive had her in the house for about 2 hours, and she seems to have made a miracoulous recovery in the last half hour, back to her normal self running around, preening eating , and her head isnt tilting and she can walk, ill keep her in for a while long tho i think

what on earth could that have been , i was convinced she was on deaths door when i first picked her up, i must be the luckiest chicken owner ever , ill chalk it up to several years of bad luck worth while for this one moment of good luck

a big THANK YOU !!!! to all of you who replied to me and offered your advice , and so quickly big hugs your way :D

Out of interest is she having a moult at the moment? One of my sussex had exactly the same symptoms last year and we rushed her to the vet thinking she had a stroke. It transpired she was having a heavy moult and had lost her strength. She was staggering around like she was drunk and collapsing. We fed her tuna for a couple of days and she was fighting fit in no time - high protein did the trick. Might be an option?
