Eglu on outside or inside of WIR?

Recommended Posts

Planning my WIR. Getting closer - and already speaking to Lewis at A4U... Not telling OH just yet...

My question...

The size will be (think) 180cm x 210cm. My first thought was Eglu inside on some sort of platform. Then I thought outside attached to the run, to make cleaning easier and give more room inside (I have room to attach the Eglu outside, but can't make the run much bigger due to layout of garden).

Can anyone give me any pros / cons to having the Eglu Classic on outside or inside??

Thanks!

I have a large WIR and two Eglu Gos. I have both Eglus up on tables so they are easy to get at to clean (especially in wet weather when I am protected by the roof ) It also means that the girls have complete use of all the space.

One of the tables came with the WIR from Tony and the other I bought cheaply from Ikea. The tables are covered with vinyl flooring which I take out and pressure wash with the Eglus in the better weather. Works well for us :D

My eglu is inside too, on a table so there's no loss of space. It sits on lino which means it's easy to swivel round to get at the poo tray. I check for eggs through the eglu door while I'm filling the feeders but it's just as easy to check for eggs through my stable door throughout the day. If your eglu is inside, rain is less likely to get in and it's a bit more sheltered from the wind.

I have to take my eglu lid off to get it out for a major clean but it's really not a bother as it's only a few times a year anyway. It can get a quick wipe over & brush out within the WIR with no bother.

There are some photos in my signature link which show how it works having it inside.

My cube is on the outside, which Lewis did for us. Apart from the cleaning aspect, it is easier to remove the eggs. One aspect I hadn't considered, you can access the cube without letting the chickens out....ie if you don't want them to fr, but want access to the cube/eglu... you dont have to go anywhere near their door. I have one very good escape artist!!
