I know that to many they are an acquired taste, but I am really starting to not be able to ignore my desire to get naked necks! As such I was just wondering if anyone who owns them could tell me anything about them? Most of what I have read confirms they are sweet birds and good layers, but do they get on well with other hens? How noisy are the hens? And if anyone could tell me what kind of age you can expect to sex them I would be very grateful!!!

Thanks,

Tim

I've got bantam TNNs and they are really delightful!

very friendly, inquisitive and not at all flighty birds. The LF are very hardy and good layers, they cope with extremes of temperature too - my banties chose to sleep outside all winter!

We hatched a couple a got a couple and I would say it was about 8 weeks or so when we knew we'd hatched one of each. We hatched welsummers at the same time, which had the same amount of socialising and they still scream and run away whenever we're near them... the TNNs run up to us and follow us around the garden.

The LF aren't terribly rare and you can usually find a good pair for about £30 or so, the bantams are harder to come by.

I adore my naked necks!

I have a naked neck cockerel (LF) he was hatched by my first broody nearly 2 years ago) he's a gent to most of his girls just has a problem with my Speckled Sussex he won't let me handle him at all but he's not nasty just run's away but I can hand feed him I don't have any pure breed TNN girls through only cross breeds all his daughters and most I've been able to sex at about 3 weeks old the dotte crosses take longer I wish I'd brought naked necks earlier it took me far to long to take the plunge

Ok, I think I am sold, anyone know any NN breeders in Yorkshire? I can't imagine they are easy to find....

I do, actually, her name is Shelley Rogerson and she's the farm manager at Temple Newsam farm in Leeds, although she lives in Wheldrake, near York. She breeds, sells and shows LF TNNs at the farm and at home.

Try phoning Temple Newsam and asking for the farm number.

Do let us have pictures once you get some as there aren't many pix of Naked Necks on here. A friend of mine has some banty ones and hers are so friendly. They fly up and sit on my shoulder whenever I visit as if they are giving their own special greeting.

Have you seen those Silkie type of Naked Necks too called 'Show girls'? craftyhunnypie posted some pictures of some recently- see this post. They look crackers but so much fun. :D

Thanks laurmurf, I actually have spoken to shelly, I saw on another forum that Temple Newsam bred them, so rang up to find some stuff out, and I spoke to Shelly, she said that temple newsam's birds all were taken by the fox about a week ago, but she's just had a hatch at home, I am waiting for her to call me back, to see if she has any idea what she has sex-wise.

I really hope it works out, I would love to have some!!
