Lively hen with Sticky Bum - HELP??

Recommended Posts

Hi All, after some sage advise please, Nikki hasn't layed for about 4 weeks now, she was fine and was running round and doing chickeny things - she still is, she feels fine, not swollen, comb and wattle is lovely and red and she seems really alert. The troube is she is not producing eggs but producing plenty of what can only be descibed as what looks like poo with shell-less egg (more eggy stuff than poo) in it and sometimes just white slimy stuff, I have given her chicken tonic and stopped all treats apart from a few greens so she has had 99.9% layers pellets and tonic for the last 5 days but no change, does anyone know what is wrong, does she need a trip to the vets ?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Having seen chicken poo ranging from yellow to squidgy white :vom: could it just be that her poo is a bit wrong? Or is the egg stuff being layed each day instead of a properly formed egg? My first question would be, have they been wormed in the last 6 months with flubenvet? That could explain the dodgy poo and the lack of eggs.

Hi Sandychick, I worm them every month with vermex and I have never had a problem before, I have 2 girls and they normally both do perfect mr whipy poos, Nikki is passing this stuff evertime she goes now but obviously there is loads in the droppings tray so does look like its not a properly formed egg????

As a first port of call, I'd worm them all with Flubenvet - this ought to be a quarterly routine.

The dodgy poo could be caused by a belly full of worms. If indeed it is a shell-less egg (impossible to tell without seeing it) then this could, again, be caused by worms affecting her uptake of nutrients. Other than the worming, I'd suggest adding extra calcium to their diet - a squirt of cod liver oil and some limestone flour usually does the job to harden up the egg shell.

If the symptoms persist when you've tried these options, then I'd suggest a trip to the vet.
