Dog waste composters

Recommended Posts

There was someone at Crufts selling a dog poo wormery, I'd have liked to go and speak to them but didn't have time. Sounds like a great idea, but can well imagine the neighbours wouldn't like it too much!!!? Would be great to hear from anyone who has first hand experience though!!!

How does it differ from a normal wormery? :? And would it take cat poo? I have one cat who has to have a litter tray during the winter (due to inability to use the cat-flap) and I would dearly love not to be throwing bags in the bin all the time. Although I suppose the wet litter would still need to be disposed of ... it's an interesting idea.

I've always understood that the reason you should not compost it is mainly the risk of disease. The meat-eating bit is what makes it smell particularly revolting, but I don't see why it wouldn't compost eventually - you can, after all, compost human waste, although not in your back garden as a rule

I tend to scoop solids out of the tray and flush down the loo, but the soggy litter still needs disposing of regularly - I don't suppose the worms would eat that.

the way I understand the reason for not putting dog and cat poo in the compost is partly to do with the way it breaks down not all of the harmful bugs are killed off in a domestic compost heap which is why the bins that you part sink in the ground are recommended but I think you need use an additive with them

It could also be to do with the regs on the control of foot and mouth BSE and samonela(sp)

I'm sure you're right SJP. My dogs hardly ever poo in the garden, they usually wait until we're on a walk. There's the odd one but I just bag that up and leave it by the back gate for when we next go to the park where there are dog waste bins.

Incidentally our neighbour who has a new puppy was ticked off by the bin men for using their garden waste bin to dispose of bagged dog waste.

Dylan is learning to do his in drains when he

is out on a walk (never trained him to do so).

Rather off topic, but Willow's foot went down a drain cover once, ended up slicing her leg right open, needed lots of stitches and a LOT of TLC to heel. Just thought I'd mention it so you can warn young Dylan to watch where he's putting his paws on drains!!! :anxious:

Really wish I'd had a chance to speak to the Dog Poo Wormery people at Crufts now ...

thats because anmial bedding and waste can't be composted with green waste it as to go to a bio digester the same as food waste as that is the only system that is approved to kill the nasties that lurk in said waste

 how much????!!!

that was my reaction when I looked them up this morning

I wonder if it makes a difference on what you dog eats too.

:lol: It'd be multi-coloured and glowing in the dark if they ate Bakers

That reminded me of this!

This story was actually started by Dr. Buckley, one of my biology lecturers at Trent Poly back in the late 1980s... or at least, one version of it was!

He was a parish councillor and his joke at a council meeting, published in the minutes, soon made its way into the local press and then the national press - all reported as fact of course!
