Alis girls
My 3yr old Omlet girl is eating her own eggs. They are having extra calcium as her shells were thin but little minx gets there before me. Cant find the link on this and am I right in thinking golf balls dont help - ie putting one in nesting box. I have an egg famine at present
Guest
Yep I have this prob too! It's a case of rushing out when Daisy lays before Chirp gets to it! Fortunately she tells the world so I know when it's arrived - but if i'm out.........she's in luck!
Purplemaniacs
My two ex batts do this, only one of them lays but they went through a phase of eating the egg even when it had a good shell. I put a couple of china eggs in the nest box and now they don't do it so much but yesterday they ate Agnes's egg before I got to it and the shell was a good quality. I think it can be a difficult habit to break Chrissie
Alis girls
Mine dont egg call sadly so I kept a beady on her today - no egg - its was a case of I'm watching you watching me
Lavenders_Blue
I have had this problem a couple of times, my now sadly departed Dorothy used to egg eat when we got new hens (not sure why, maybe just a very highly strung hen!). I used the mustard egg trick - blow out the contents of a couple of eggs and refill with mustard. Place them in the nest box as a tasty treat for your egg eater. She will soon rethink her egg eating habit once she's chomped her way through a couple of yukky mustard eggs!
BuryFCA1
Pu an old egg shell together with either mustard or fairy liquid in it. This will soon cause a nasty shock and ensure they stop eating the eggs

If I can get there in time, I can sometimes (literally!) fight her for the egg - but most times she simply secretly eats it! H
House MD 221B
Is it their way of trying to get particular nutrients? Maybe upping their protein levels? Sunflower seeds, meal worms etc.
Alis girls
mine do have meal worms and greens and extra calcium plus chicken spice. Have got some mustard in an egg shell - yum - will await result
gongladosh
in addition to extra calcium (grit or limestone flour) you may want to try some cod liver oil to help her absorb the calcium (sometimes they need this!)
Alis girls
Thanks might give that a try - honestly the things we girls have to put up with menopause/henopause .
