patsylabrador
Well done you. It's one of those things, going to the dentist, that I will put off, even when I know that he can stop a pain within a couple of days that I would rather put up with for months than get help. It might well hurt for a week or two and be sensitive to hot/cold/sweet for a while. My experience is that's ok.
Seagazer
Hopefully its feeling a bit better now, I also hate going to the dentist but I do go. I always come out with more pain than when I went in
Bramble
Hello! I have had root canal twice, the first time I felt no pain whatsoever, but the second time was quite painful. Apparently the treatment can cause a fair bit of bruising which is the reason for the pain, but each day it improved and I was fine after about a week. I would say if the pain does not improve, you should ring the dentist for further advice. Good luck and keep us posted!
Daphne
I really feel for you I am a complete wuss when it comes to the dentist and put it off till there is a disaster. A teeeny tiny bit of good news - I had RC treatment years ago which I'd managed to forget about so the pain does become a memory. I broke a tooth a month ago and it turned out to be the RC-treated tooth. So this time round I felt absolutely nothing as she prodded and poked and I sat there with a mouth full of clamps as she filled it If the pain doesn't subside within whatever timeframe they gave you, I'd ring for an emergency appointment. Chucky Mama
My MIL had 2 root canal treatments within the space of 2-3 days and suffered for months. It turned out that neither tooth that had treatment were the issue I had one done and never had a moments pain but it was done by a endodontist rather than a 'normal' dentist on the recommendation of a friend that is a dental nurse. He did it in 2 stages (I fell asleep both times) and left a couple of weeks between stages and ensured that the abscess and the pain had settled before making the root canal permanent. Toothache is horrible, I hope things settle down for you soon.
LisaP
I've had a couple done too and the pain eased after a couple of days. I hope you feel better soon but like others have said, if the pain persists maybe you should contact the dentist Lisa P
Mercedes55
I've had a root canal done 3 times on 1 tooth and 2 times on another. Last time I had them done I went to an Endodontist who use special equipment because apparently you can have some tiny canals that a normal dentist can't see with their equipment. I believe that each time you have a root canal done the success rate goes down, starts off at 98% I think. I didn't find it too bad, although the last appts were done in 2 stages and each one lasted nearly 2hrs What I found worse than having a root canal was having to see the Periodontalist who did gum surgery on me and cut away some of the gums around the tooth that I was having the root canal work done on. It wasn't so much what she did, more the length of time it took to heal up afterwards
sadietoo
I have had three root canal fillings done and in each case I had no pain afterwards, but my OH has had two and has had considerable amount of pain until it settles down. It is a lot of drilling and fiddling about, and it makes sense that it causes a lot of bruising as others have said. How about taking some Arnica for that ? my best friend swears by it (and I have now got some in our medicine cabinet....) Hope you feel better soon, toothache is a truly miserable experience x
Eggasperated
I really sympathise with you kk, the soreness from the removal of my wisdom tooth on Monday is still there and any food or drink sets it all off again. I've also got to have some root canal work done on some other teeth when this heals up so everyone's comment are interesting (scary ) to read. Hope you feel better soon. keyhole kate
Thank you for all your kind words and sympathy I am so much better today I haven't even needed painkillers I think it was so painful last night because the infection had spread into my sinuses I have had root canals done before but have been treated sooner. The biggest pain is the £209 I have had to pay to have crown fitted to protect what is now a dead tooth

The biggest pain is the £209 I have had to pay to have crown fitted to protect what is now a dead tooth That's not actually a bad price to pay. I counted up what I had spent over a 2yr period and it amounted to over £6,000. That was just for 2 root canals and 3 crowns. Both of the root canals had to be redone, yet I was charged in full for the ones that failed. I'd had one tooth crowned and that had to be replaced when the root canal was redone
Bramble
I'm with Mercedes - I've just had root canal done on one tooth, with the obligatory crown and that cost £1100, but that's not counting all the faffing about with appointments and other treatments that didn't work - I reckon £1500 in total

One thing I would add about root canals is to make sure your dentist uses a Rubber Dam when they do this procedure. My regular dentist never used one and both failed, my son goes to the same practice but has a different dentist. When he had a root canal done his dentist used a Rubber Dam and his tooth was fine. My Endodontist told me she would refuse to even do a root canal without using one as in her opinion it's essential to use one.

Bramble
The rubber dam is a piece of green rubber that the dentist sets up over the tooth (it just leaves the tooth he is working on sticking out like a done up button on a coat - not a very good description, but you'll know whether your dentist used this or not!) They use it when they do the root canal. It serves a couple of purposes I was told. Firstly it makes sure no bacteria from your mouth can get inside the tooth while they are working on it which is apparently very important. It also stops all the bits from the tooth getting into your mouth. They are a "once only" item and I think I was charged about £50 each time one was used
keyhole kate
Ahhhh thanks for the description no I didn't have the rubber dam I did the last time I had to have a root canal done though I thought it was to stop anything dropping into the back of your throat

keyhole kate
It's absolutely fine however I want to check out whether another tooth which is broken can also be crowned as I think the £209 already paid is the max amount towards NHS treatment as that's what I was quoted for broken tooth I paid £17.50 In March to have it filed as well as well as filing on the tooth that I have had to have the root canal and crown on.
