LolaLayla
For a fund raiser a group of us is thinking about making teacup candles. We can source the teacups from charity shops but does anyone know where the cheapest place is to get the other materials? Also does anyone know if you use a special oil to make them scented? Could you boil down old candles and use the wax? Does anyone have any tips for successful candle making? How much could you charge for a teacup candle? I have been asked to find out these things and am sure some Omleteers will have the answers Any advice gratefully received
bluekarin
My ED and I have made candles. If you can, read up about how to do them, either online or get a library book. You have to be careful about how hot you get the wax, what size wick to have plus various other things. I think it is a lovely idea though. The scents can be any essential oils. You can make candles which have chunks of wax in, or a 'sambucca' candle with coffee beans and vanilla. You can put dried flowers, beans, cinnamon, star anise, what ever you like really. We have only made them from kits and bought some extra wax and stuff from our local craft supplier. A few links for you http://www.channel4.com/4beauty/style/budget-fashion/how-to-make-a-teacup-candle http://www.allaboutyou.com/craft/knit-free/make-beautiful-teacup-candles-49028 Plus there are loads more online. Have fun and I look forward to the finished pictures
LolaLayla
Thanks for the info I know it is early but we were thinking ahead for things for the (dare I mention the word) Christmas Fayre. Things that have been made in previous years cost a lot and made a little so we are hopeful that something like this would work. We are just at the planning stage and hope to get started after summer.
Christian
*LolaLayla wins the prize for saying Christmas so early* Good luck with the candle making. I have done it with terracotta pots and wax beads and it is simple enough. Try attaching the wick to thread and then sellotaping the thread to the cup - that way it stays in the middle and doesn't fall over!

Chook n Boo Mum
What a shame you are the other end of our world .....we use candles on our tables of an evening & are invariably left with a few inches of unusable stub .... you would be very welcome to have & use them, tho postage would make it unviable I suspect ....let me know if you are interested & I can make enquiries
LolaLayla
How kind of you Thank you for the offer but as you say the postage would probably make it as expensive as buying the wax. I am looking at websites and will let the group know prices etc at our next meeting.
craftyhunnypie
They once made them on Superscrimpers. It might still be on the website. Good luck with them! Emma.x
LolaLayla
Thanks Emma- will have a search. I did not realise there were different sizes of wick so I will need to try to work out what I need for teacups
LolaLayla
Actually started making these now for church fair. I have got the right wicks, teacups from the congregation and wax from the ends of the church candles. All seems to be going well apart from getting the scent right. I have bought essential oil from ebay supposedly for candles and have kept increasing the number of drops (now up to 50) but still the scent is faint. Has anyone bought oil from a supplier that was successful? If so who did you get it from and how much of it for a teacup? I am relying on someone on here to have the knowledge Thank you. freddie
look on the Soap Kitchen website, but don't blame me for the large basket you'll end up with!
LolaLayla
Thank you Wow what a selection of things! But I am not sure if the essence would be right for candle making as I have read that some do not mix through the wax but fall to the bottom. I think that may have happened with the essence I have. That is why I am hoping that someone will have had success with a specific essence and can let me know
