Cinnamon
No-one would eat Quorn if they knew what it was! Kev. Quorn makes me so ill! I'll not describe the symptoms on a family forum, and particularly not at breakfast time, but I think the stuff is positively toxic.....and I'm sure I read that some of the products contain eggs which are from battery hens. It makes a friend of mine similarly ill so I rest my case! Me too, Me too! It means I can't leave the house for a day at least
theherd123
Quorn is made from fungi and we love it in our house & no side effects whatsoever In fact today im making spag bol, chilli and curry with it!
Lesley
I like Quorn as well - but don't very often eat it now. I thought they'd changed to using free range eggs in its manufacture?
Tina C
That was quick - see response from Quorn below. Have highlighted the important bit - am now off to check Vegetarian Society seedling symbol because I don't know what it is Dear Tina Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Quorn products. Marlow Foods are delighted to tell you that all Quorn products on sale in the UK and Europe are now being made with free range eggs, and are approved by The Vegetarian Society. Over the years we have worked closely with our egg suppliers, The Egg Association and the Vegetarian Society in order to achieve this goal. Due to stock holding policies however, it may take some time for some of these products to get into the shops, so please check individual packs for the Vegetarian Society seedling symbol to ensure that the product you have bought now contains free range eggs. Assuring you of our best attention at all times. Yours sincerely Caitlin O'Donnell Consumer Care Advisor
Lesley
It's the green V logo which they use Tina - I think? It is like a little seedling.
Richard
It looks like this;
Tina C
It is blue and yellow and seed-shaped! I tried to paste it on here but I couldn't. It means - The seedling symbol has four strict criteria: Products have to be free of animal flesh, meat or bone stock, animal carcass fats, gelatine, aspic, or any other products resulting from slaughter. Products and ingredients should not have been tested on animals Eggs used must be free range Products must be GMO free Products must also be free from cross contamination with non vegetarian products/ingredients in the production process. I did not know about this - is it new??? Anyway its worth knowing becuase of the bit about free-range eggs.... Sorry I think I have hijacked this thread. Aaargh I am going to be thrown off the forum.... sorry.

redfrock
Gosh We try not to buy much veg from the supermarket and get a veg box each week from Riverford. We had tried to use Able & Cole but found most of their stuff went past it's best in a couple of days. Riverford has been fine so far (2 months) A xx OOh that's interesting. I used A & C for a couple of weeks and was really disapointed with the quality of their produce - it was always a bit 'close to the turn' and the final straw was when I picked out the swede and found they had placed it so that the side without all the creepy crawlie holes was facing me. That side was virtually eaten away I try and buy the best possible but money is tight. I always buy free range, never bog standard but quite often organic meat is out of my price range. Other things I will judge by price and freshness. If it isn't too steep a difference I would rather have organic but the purse doesn't always allow it. My carrots and spuds are always organic as are my tinned tomatoes ( I think the taste difference is noticable) and and his milk (unfortunately you can't get my lactose free milk in organic yet). I wish my shopping was as cheap as that receipt! My husband eats like a horse. I am not a big meat eater but OH will not eat it if there is no meat involved. Our Asda does a lot of organic produce but is a bit out of the way, the tesco stuff is always pretty manky, sainsbury is small and very small selection. I have 'The Goods Shed' around the corner from my work which is like a daily farmers market but I rarely get in there because my job involves me being out of the office about 4 days a week and they are shut on my duty day (Monday). My slow cooker is a god send - better quality meat but a cheaper cut (if that makes sense) and it still comes out gorgeous. I also try to pile Andy's plate with veg so it still looks full and hopefully he won't notice that the meat portion size os slowly getting smaller! Do you think he will notice if it eventually disappears completely?!? Yesterday I went to do my food shop, didn't get there until noon. The veg shelves were literally empty of everuthing - organic and non-organic. I came home with one piece of brocolli (I always do three veg with dinner) but .... my home grown spinach and courgettes were ready to be cut and wow the taste difference was amazing - even to organic things. This was the first year I have bene able to grow anything as I now have a bigger garden. I have grown everything from seed and I am thrilled (although not about the courgette plant spines I still have in my fingers today ) Claire x PS fab thread and sorry my post is so long! Egluntyne
Am glad to hear they now use free range eggs. A step in the right direction. However, I shan't touch it with a bargepole......the consequences are just to dire. Am amazed that so many fellow Omleteers can't eat Quorn either. It can't be all in my mind then as has been suggested.

Rhapsody
Can I stick up for Abel&Cole? I used them when I lived in civilisation and it was for me a good experience. If something is off or bad you just ring them and they recredit you without a quibble or re-send on your next order. Always friendly and helpful on the phone- I wish they delivered here! It all looks really nice, although I think the hens will be benefitting from the cabbage The bag of salad is very small, the onions I was expecting are of the spring variety & the new pots are very, very big, but now I know for next time

Laura & CTB
Got my delivery from A & C yesterday and I'm very pleased with it. Bearing in mind it was only a small box for one person there was quite a lot in it. 4 x bananas mango a huge bag of chard 2 x big oranges cucumber about 12 x big carrots lettuce potatoes This cost me £10 I dont know how much this would have cost in the supermarket but it's worth every penny that I didn't have to go there myself!! Guest
We keep getting Abel & Cole leaflets I am very wary of them as there is no address on the leaflet and it has things like 'milk and cream from Cornwall, fish from Grimsby etc etc How can this be environmentall friendly. If I order from them will I get my stuff from far flung corners of GB packed etc in a central depot and then shipped to me in the West Mids I'm not sure how they work I was having a veg box that came from Shropshire, but the company is now merging with another on e and I will have to have stuff from Herefordshire and the equivalent box is £4 more I am growing a lot of things but it won't be enough for all of us for the whole year I don't know what I am going to do at the moment, there is a company a couple of miles away but I think I want to choose my own veg and fruit now rather than being sent things and then deciding what to do with it I certainly don't want to go back to the supermarkets
