Help ,My chickens are 2 months old,and doing yellow poo

Recommended Posts

HI Smarty

If your chicks are only 2 months old. they need should have been on chick crumb (until 6 or 8 weeks) and should only just moving onto growers pellets now. They shouldn't be on layers pellets until they are much older (ready to lay, or laying).

Layers pellets contain too much calcium for young birds, and it can affect their bone growth of fed too young.

Introducing a bit of fresh green veg is a OK in moderation, although I'd stay off fruit for now. I'd also stay off the veg for a little while until you get them eating the growers pellets happily and their poos have stabilised.

Why are they on coxoid? It's a treatment (unlicensed for poultry) for coccidiosis, not a general tonic. Do they have bloody poo and/or the other symptoms of coccidiosis?

If they aren't suffering from this condition I'd take them off it as it's a pretty rough and tough treatment. Pop them on a good general tonic to try and build them up a bit after taking it.

Of course if they do have coccidiosis then you obviously need it though!

Is their poo always yellow? It's it's only now and then it's normal (google caecal droppings).

Yes they really shouldn't be having coxoid unless it has been confirmed that your chicks have coccidiosis. It's really taxing on their systems and from memory you have to give something else to counteract this. Unless it has been prescribed by a vet I would take them off it pretty quickly. Sorry.

Meant to add that your chicks should be on chick crumb probably for a few more weeks then growers untill they are laying and even for a wee while beyond that. Only once they are fully mature & into their laying cycle do they need layers mash/ pellets. So off the coxoid, unless advised by a vet or if confirmed they have coccidiosis, and back onto chick crumb or growers mash/pellets. Hope this helps. Alli x

Many people give their chicks Coxoid if they are unable to source medicated chick crumbs. It is added to drinking water for one week only, and the advice is that a vitamin tonic should be given afterwards. Coxoid shouldn't be given to poultry intended for human consumptionand in older hens, there is an egg withdrawal period of 28 days.

Smarty456, I still recommend that you keep your chicks on pellets (growers) or unmedicated chick crumbs only for a few days, and if matters don't improve, you need to seek the advice of a vet as chicks go downhill very quickly.
