The best advice I can give is to get another hen, although I know you say you're not in a position to get any more. There are people - and some of them will probably post on here - who have kept a lone hen successfully, but the general view is that they are happier in a flock.

I still reckon it's not fair on a hen to leave her alone - they're flock creatures and need to be with their own kind.

If I were you, I'd go to a local chicken breeder and try and get a couple of older birds (post-POL) to join her - you might even get them cheap! [no pun intended] :D

If you can't get her a friend I would be inclined to rehome.

But, a friend of mine successfully kept a lone chicken as a house chicken, which is fine if you can stand the poop, she was also at home quite a lot of the time. She was an ex-bat.

I've found an animal sanctury near me that will take her as they have a whole flock of FR hens!! :D . She's a big lady so should be able to cope with getting in the pecking order. I'm glad she will be with other birds as I went home at lunchtime to see her and she looked very upset and was looking for Nugget.

I too only have one hen left and she's as happy as Larry. She's got a large run and I've let the guinea pigs share it with her - they get on great and keep each other company. I did wonder how she would get on but she's still the same as ever, sometimes I think she may even be happier as she's not pushed out when the food/treats come along. She still greets me when I come home from work and I'm glad she's still with me.
