What's it like where you live?

Recommended Posts

This is great Kate - I haven't been able to do anything else since I came online! - I'll have to work out how to do the links to places near me - they are well worth seeing - some beautiful shots of a beautiful part of the country (even if I do say so myself)

Find a picture that you want to put on the forum and right click on the address in the bar at the top of the page. You'll get a little menu box come up. Select copy on this then when you get back onto the forum paste it into the post a reply box here. Hightlight this address again and click the URL button at the top right of the posting box and that will put the address of the picture into your posting.

Here goes - let's hope it works!

These are some of the beaches near me: -

Saunton Sands - This is the beach nearest to the village I grew up in and where my mates and I used to go when the teacher's went on strike

Woolacombe Sands and Croyde Bay - A couple of other beaches where I spent my summers.

Will make sure this works before posting more (but I think I've mastered it!)

Yes it is beautiful - but there's better still to come! I'll post some more later.

I looked at yours too - it's lovely near you too :D I had a friend who used to manage a farm in Rutland - we used to stay at a hotel called the Whipper Inn at Okeham when we visited. I never went to Rutland Water but I will try and visit one day because it looks lovely and tranquil.

Croyde Bay

Croyde Bay was a favourite camping holiday destination when I was a child. The site was in a field right next to the beach. I have a faint memory of Saunton Sands as well, it was a long time ago 30 years or more. Devon is an area I would love to visit again with my children.

There are some lovely pics for Banbury and surrounding areas.

Thanks for that Kate :D

Hey Clare! I went through Banbury yesterday on the train and I was wondering why Banbury (and Oxford) are the only two towns on the Wolverhampton (Low Level) Great Western mainline to Paddington that haven't retained their pre-war, gorgeous GW architecture (they're quite horrible really* - just like Wolverhampton (High Level), Stafford, Coventry, Tamworth, New Street and Euston stations - horrible 60s designs)...

I wonder why that is? :?:?:?

I'm ever so jealous of places like Rugby and Stoke that have retained their old LNWR buildings (although Rugby has now lost its glass canopy)...

PS

Really brilliant thread guys! :D

* Hasten to add that I think Banbury looks brilliant (it was only the station that I was decrying)!!!

KWYM Dan, that station at Banbury has always been a pit - they refurbed it recently so at least it doesn't leak/smell of rot anymore, But that end of town has very little going for it I'm afraid.

My parents live in Elstree, herts, and i was very sad when they tore down the lovely Victorian station building - end of an era!.

Have you been to the steam railway museum at Quainton? The kids would love it - i do!

"A week on Tuesday" :x:lol:

One thing I miss about living in the Midlands........it is in the middle :!:

I would really like to visit the Eden project in Cornwall and have a spin on the London Eye. Ah well I will just have to go by myself and leave Hubby to look after the children. :D

.... a teddy or similar goes travelling with people and pix of it by various landmarks ...

Esther's Year 1 teacher did that...if a child was going somewhere interesting at the w/e or holidays, Barnaby Bear could be borrowed, then they told the class about it on their return.

So, Barnaby Bear went to the seaside, visited Grandparents, went to the fair, and even went to Spain & Florida.

My brother works in the theatre, and I think that even the teacher was surprised that Barnaby Bear had his photo taken outside the amazing chiming automata clock in Munich. Then went to the Opera, including champagne reception and 1st night after show party (with a 6yr old!). We also went to the Gay Festival, but Barnaby Bear didn't "Show & Tell" about that.

The highlight for him was The Teddy Bear Museum! What an educational weekend. 8)

Sorry, I'll get back on topic in a mo. :?

Okay here goes with some more pics (I've got the hang of this now so there's no stopping me! :D ) All these places are within a 10 mile radius of our house :D

The Tarka Trail - my office overlooks the Tarka Trail :D

Bideford - This is my nearest market town.

Bucks Mill - Very tiny pretty hamlet with little lane leading to the sea - my friend lives in one of the cottages in this picture - most spectacular uninterputed views straight out to sea from her kitchen and bedroom window (me = very jealous)

Clovelly Main Street - so pretty and unique - steep cobbled street leading to sea harbour - no cars - donkeys deliver all the shopping to residents!! This is quite near us and we like to go to the pub at the bottom :D

Clovelly Harbour - Clovelly again - this time a shot of the harbour looking back up at the village - we sometimes arrive from this direction in a boat - it means you have to climb the wooden ladder to the left to get onto the harbour wall!! In the summer I rowed a gig out of Clovelly Harbour and out to sea (a gig is an old open rowing boat that takes 6 staggered oarsman and someone at the front to shout at you!)

Speke's Mill - This is amazing!

The Big Sheep - Come and place your bets for the daily sheeps races!!

Hartland Coast - Another lovely place very near to us although I don't visit as often as I should.

South West Coast Path - We can walk here from our house :D

Braunton Burrows - its a SSSI and UNESCO nature reserve site and everything that you get for those special places with fancy bits of flora and fauna. I learnt heaps of stuff exploring the burrows in my youth. Its the largest sand dune system in England. I know they worry about erosion of the dunes these days but I'm telling you now that you have not lived until you have run down a huge steep sand dune at high speed out of control - I spent a good deal of childhood doing this (it may explain a few things :?

Lundy Island - This is within boating distance. Its fantastic with amazing scenery and wildlife - popoise/seals/puffins/wild horse/sheep - last time I went we saw a basking shark on the way over!! :D

I've not done the Eden project yet, but Lesley has been there. I've done the Londo Eye, though and it is worth every penny. And that's from someone who is scared of heights!

If you need somewhere to stay in the midlands, then give me a shout - might have finished the spare room by then!

I've just found this thread (computers back & fixed, so I'm doing some major catching up  ) and I'm really diappointed about the links for my home town. OK Dartford's not the most exciting or attractive place in the country, and we do have a very good selection of road links, but honestly there's loads of pictures of M25 junctions, the QE2 bridge from a variety of different angles, and interior and exterior shots of Bluewater Shopping centre  Dartford has lots more to offer than that. I'm just going to have get out there with a camera and add my own pics. For starters I have a wonderful lttle wood which is really quite local, and I love spending time in there, and several other local places are equally worth a visit, and a photo. I'm definitely going to have to put the record straight. M25
