Luvachicken
We were just trying to look at holiday places - last minute as usual - and thought Iceland, not the shop , looked interesting. Has any one been and if so, what did you think of it ? Thanks xx
chickencam
My DS went there with the school last summer and loved it, he loved the fact that there was a very small population and said that the scenery was stunning, and that he found a Cadbury Dream bar in a shop where he stuggles to find them over here, not really realavent I know but it made me chuckle. There are a lot of English speakers over there and the weather was better there than here, but then that wouldn't be hard. He loved the Blue lagoon they went there a couple of times including in a gale which he said was weird but fun.
Alis girls
i think Docsquid went a few years back as I recall some pics. i am assuming you mean place and not the shop?
snowberry
Iceland is at the top of my list when I win the lottery
dancing cloud
If you're interested in volcanoes, waterfalls and marine wildlife, it's fantastic! You're not likely to get much of a suntan, but the views are hard to beat, and you may even see midnight sun while whale-watching at this time of year. Food and drink can be expensive compared to the UK, so avoid self-catering if you can, and we found the people very friendly and welcoming (and mainly speaking excellent English). Roads are generally good too, if you want to drive around
Medwriter
Iceland is fantastic! We have been twice. The first time was mid-July; we hired a car and drove over most of the country, including mountain roads that are only open in the summer, seeing volcanoes and waterfalls, and bathing in hot springs; we stayed mainly in hostels overnight, so largely self-catering. The second time was end-February, when we stayed at a hotel at LAke Myvatn in the north of the country and did winter pursuits, like cross-country skiing and snow-mobiling. Riding an Icelandic horse on the frozen lake still counts as one of my best experiences ever We found the people very friendly and really wanted to help us get the best out of our stay on both occasions; most speak at least some English, and many are very fluent. It was quite expensive (especially alcohol), but we went before the financial crash and I think the exchange rate is more favourable now. If you like outdoors-type holidays (rather than lying on a beach), I can definitely recommend it.
Ain't Nobody Here
We seriously looked at it for our holiday this year but it was going to be really expensive taking our 2 teenagers too so I think we'll try to do it when they've both left home (which happens this Sept!) It looks amazing - Docsquid's stunning Facebook photos were what inspired me to look into it .
chickencam
It is expensive it cost DS nearly £900 plus about another £70 spending money, he said things like drinks are particularly so, and he refused to send a postcard because it cost more for a stamp than it did for a 2l bottle of coke! alih
It is the most magnificent country I have ever been to. If you like the outdoors life, spectacular landscapes and want to see something unique, go without second thought. I went a few years ago on a trek to raise money for Macmillan and we walked through moonscapes, black volcanis sand, hot springs, green hills and turquoise glaciers. It was breathtaking. Luvachicken
Thanks for all that everyone. It has been very helpful. The thing that bothers me most is the weather. Very similar to ours or chillier, and as we seem to have had some rubbish summers for the last few years I really wanted something warmer.................so we shall see....... chickencam
When we were having rubbish weather in July last year DS had sunshine and 18-20 degrees, it did get quite windy though.
