LolaCola
Hi, I put my eggs in the incy last night around 7, went to turn them this morning, on one has this reddy brown stuff oozing through the shell, I removed it straight away. Was I right to remove? And can any one they'll me what it is/happened? tyia
sjp
yes it souds like a rotton egg or at least a poor shelled egg. are they brought in eggs?
Snowy
No idea what it is, I'm sure someone in the know will come along shortly! But it doesn't sound right - I think you were right to remove it.
Purplemaniacs
I think you were right to remove it eggs should not leak but no idea why unless it was rotten, good luck with the rest of the eggs. Chrissie
LolaCola
Yes, was brought via eBay, I brought 6, off one seller, and have had to remove that one and discard 3 others already as they were absolutely covered in chicken poo shame as they were the ones my children choose. LolaCola
I just hope they don't contaminate my rather expensive silkie eggs. Should I remove all the eggs from that seller? Thank you for all your replys.
LolaCola
Another one it starting to ooze now! Could I have caused this? I stored them 24h stored pointy end down. Or should I contact the seller! I don't like complaining, but I does seem as if they are all rubbish
sjp
I'd candle they for a start if they aren't clear like a fresh egg then they are either very old eggs or part incubated either way you need to tell the seller
LolaCola
I candled before putting them in, and they wasn't compactly clear, almost like they had a shadow inside, but as a newbie, I wasn't really ure what I was looking for. What should I do re other eggs? Remove or leave and hope for the best?
mimi5
Of course it's up to you, but I'd be inclined to take out all eggs from that seller and discard them. It seems you are very keen on your silkie eggs and it might be better to give them the best start? Also don't be to hard on yourself hatching eggs are at the mercy of the post!!!! I hatched this year for the first time (with broody hens) and the best results were from my own eggs!!! 100%, even though I sought out local ebay sellers and collected the eggs directly from them myself. Of the 3 aruacana eggs, only 1 hatched and it died day 3. The 6 mixed pekin eggs, only 3 hatched and they are 8 weeks old now!!! Atleast hopefully the eggs wont have cost a fortune. All the best!!!!!!
Egluntyne
TBh I'd s"Ooops, word censored!" the lot , deep clean the incubator and start again with eggs from a different source. I'd also contact the seller ... and give negative feedback if you don't get satisfaction.
LolaCola
Mimi5, congrats on your hatch, would love to have my own eggs, but I'm not aloud a male due to close neighbours Egluntyne, even the silkie eggs? I would gladly remove the orp eggs, but the silkies cost more than I should have spent. I candled the ozzing/weeping eggs and one was completely black inside, (gas I would assume) so I broke it, major mistake! Lord, the smell! But I wanted to know what had gone wrong, I would say it was deffanitly partly incubated, it has a tough shell with veins inside, and a grey/black like mass. bearing in mind they were in the incy less than 12 hours, I fail to see they would have got to this state in such a short time, if they were just 'bad eggs' The seller is offering to replace a few, but im not sure I want them, I know it's a bit of a lotto buying eggs via eBay, but I only expected a few not to hatch or to be removed at candling mid cycle, not in less than 24 hours, to be 5 eggs down! sjp
are the silkie egg from the same seller and how did they candle if the same as the orp egg then I think A:- you will have to bin them and B:- have a big conversation with the seller
LolaCola
No, they re from seperate sellers. There still in incy at the moment, still deciding what to do.....
LolaCola
I have done some net research, and found so one else that has had the samething, posting the link, incase it helps someone else. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/02/bad-egg-in-incubator-ticking-time-bomb.html I'm going to remove the eggs now, and ask for a refund, as I'm sure they were incubated, as the shell of the 1st egg was so developed, thick, white and full of veins. There is no way, with what I have read, that that has happened in less than 24 hours. I'm not sure of my consumer rights when buying fertile eggs.... Snowy
If they are from separate sellers, I would go with my instinct and remove the ones from the dodgy seller and keep the others incubating. They may be OK, if not, you know what to look for now!
Redwing
I'd also take a chance on leaving the Silkie eggs in provided they werent in direct contact with the bad eggs, remove all the eggs and check for nasties on the base or tray of the incubator, wipe away any drops with a clean damp cloth and wipe dry with kitchen roll then replace the Silkie eggs, leave any vents wide open so the humidity doesnt rise as a result of the clean I would ask for a refund from the seller of the bad eggs and once safely received leave negative feedback
LolaCola
Contacted seller, he has said no refunds ( even though it states in his ad, he accepts refunds) he will send me replacements if I stump up another £6 for postage. Although I don't want to go through that again, my home smells of rottern eggs, that no amount of cleaning will get rid off! Lesson learn't, and my children are terribly upset! Is there anywhere safe to buy eggs?
Egluntyne
Directly from a reputable breeder is your best bet. Many will post the eggs out to you.
Hayleybug
if you paid via paypal i would open a dispute as items were not as described and go from there, the seller cant offer replacements and then charge you postage as the items supplied initially werent the items you paid for. thats how i see it anyway, and paypal/ebay will usually side with the buyer in a case such as this in my experience. definitely do it if you can, dont let this seller get away with potentially ruining your whole hatch! good luck! Redwing
I think that as eggs are perishable the dispute guidelines are a bit of a grey area I would simply leave them negative feedback saying the eggs were part incubated and rotten, I wouldnt be lining their pocket with another £6 personally What eggs were they? I am not far away and may know of a local breeder
LolaCola
I'll try opening a dispute via PayPal, but don't hold much hope. They were bantam Orpingtons. I just hope they havn't ruined the bantam silkie eggs.
Mrs_B
I'll try opening a dispute via PayPal, but don't hold much hope. Good luck! Personally, I think you may be surprised because as a customer you didn't get what you paid for and the seller advertised refunds but didn't give you one! Hope your Silkie eggs are OK too x

LolaCola
Thanks everyone, and to Redwing for the link. I think this is a a major lesson learnt, and will be leaving a honest feedback so no one has to got through the same thing, it has been quite stressful and upsetting, especially for my children. I have opened a dispute, but whatever the outcome, will be looking for a breeder, not using eBay! Might even just buy pullets, such a shame though, as we had been so looking forward to hatching, and had a few pet homes lined up, if we was very successful. I'm still hopeful for the silkies, keeping everything crossed!
