counturchickens
Jackian may well be interested in this story. Our allotment friend keeps a number of hens on his allotment. They are very well looked after, and he goes twice a day to check on them. Recently, he had a broody, so bought some eggs. They didn't hatch, so being a softy at heart (despite appearances) he bought some chicks which had been successfully reared for about 2 months by the broody. Then at the weekend, some unspeakable people broke in and stole the chicks and hen. It was definitely people and not a fox, as they removed a concrete slab on top of the house. His main girls are shut in and padlocked, but he had the babies in a seperate run. He is absolutely distraught, and is threatening to pack the whole thing in. It is really awful, I am shocked at the depths some people will plummet to.

gongladosh
awful - poor, poor girls. I really can't figure why someone would want do do anything like that!
jackian
After writing on here about the pros and cons of keeping chickens on an allotment , there were various replies and the jury is still out! I know that some people have no choice but it was not for me ... I could not think of not being able to keep an eye on my girls but then I am a soppy sentimentalist. Now hearing this very sad event it makes you wonder why any one would want to do this as they are not worth a lot of money to anyone. ...I suppose it is because they can! Having had allotments for 10 years we have no chickens on our site at all but we do have occasional people popping in with carrier bags ...because they think they can. Very sad
Egluntyne
Hens are just as likely to be stolen from back gardens. There have been several incidents reported here over the years. At least with an allotment, there are generally people around during the day. Whereas, in a back garden situation, the hens may be left either free ranging or in a run, but unattended for most of the day whilst their owners are at work. The Dogmother
I hope he's reported it to the police, they treat rural/animal crimes just as seriously as regular stuff.
