emily95
Hello! Having passed my driving test last week, I'm now trying to insure my car - but the cheapest quote I've found so far is £6000! I was just wondering which companies you had used for insurance for people who have just passed their test? Surely it can't be that expensive? Thanks in advance! merlina
firstly, depending on what your car is, it may be cheaper to change that (to something inexpensive, with a small engine with inexpensive parts - like an Astra, at least until you've built up some no claims) Hopefully you can also report low mileage? (I'm guessing you're young - not a lot we can do about that!) When I was young (a long time ago!) the co-op was the cheapest by far also worth looking at is endsleigh who specialise in young people have a chat with a broker - I'd try a local broker plus someone like the AA - the latter found me the best deal for the past few years Always ring these companies - they seem to try hard to find a good deal rather than relying on online comparision sites EDIT - PS - congratulations on the test! PPS some insurers offer discounts for pass plus exams; having one of those computer/tachometer gizmos in the car etc, but they tend to be the more expensive companies in the first place
Ain't Nobody Here
Congratulations . We changed our car insurance to The Co-op Young Driver Insurance policy last year when my YS was learning to drive (he's passed now but ES is now learning). You have to have a box fitted in your car but it was an easy process. I think our premium is about £480 (it can go up or down slightly depending on your standard of driving). It might be more expensive if you're the owner/only driver but it's probably worth looking into!
emily95
Thanks for the replies and congratulations!! I've just looked at the Co-op Young Drivers and have got it down to £4681, and as the car is registered to me am going to see what difference it makes if I register it to my parents instead... It's only a little Toyota Aygo!
Cinnamon
Congrats from me too. Sadly its illegal to register the car to your parents & have them as the main drivers with you as an additional, unless that is actually how it is (my daughter is at Uni,so only drives my car as an additional driver once in a blue moon) I read an article about this just the other week. the way they 'catch' people is by if you have asked for a quote as you as the main driver first, therefore verifying that you are in fact the main driver of the vehicle. Just trying to give some advise
Space Chick
My friend in work when she was insuring her daughters car found that if you added loads of older people it came further an further down.... So she added herself, her husband, her daughters father and her father as well as her daughter and got the premium down from £4500 to £1200
merlina
Your car looks to be insurance group 3, but some insurers will still load it because the parts aren't cheap (and if it's fairly new that can cost even more) That's still a massive premium! ouch (have you tried sheila's wheels - specialist insurance for women?) It's fine to add people to your insurance as additional drivers *if* they might actually drive your car - even if only occasionally. It is indeed illegal (and you could find yourself uninsured) if they wouldn't really drive it. If you have people who could/might (at least in theory) drive, then adding them is a great way to get the premium down - usually they will need to be 40+ and have fabulous driving record to have a substantial impact. You usually only need one or two people (eg parents). Don't try an register it on your parents' insurance (ie in their name) though - that's a criminal offence and at the very least you'd be uninsured (minimum of 6 points on the licence)
emily95
Thanks for the advice everyone! My dad's rung up a company and they can give me a quote on monday or tuesday, so I'm waiting to hear back from them. Don't worry - I won't do anything illegal! counturchickens
Maybe try diamond, also ladies only! I had a small accident a few years ago, with a gate post and they were great.
Saronne
Be careful of online 'deals' for young drivers. There was a report this autumn about invalid 'scam' car insurance companies operating on the internet: http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CIQBEBYwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fuk-england-leicestershire-16523957&ei=PB8VUInPEM2Z0QWXkIDICw&usg=AFQjCNFRyzty27bgD3PLHztn1ej-jteDdA&sig2=KM4YYs2I6Dn3lW7iktlMxA
scubababe
Congratulations. When my Step-daughter passed her test we got her a little cinquento and added myself and husband as drivers. She has now built up 2 years no claims and has a Ka. It does work adding 'older drivers'. Good luck in your search and hope you find something reasonable soon
PapaJuliet
How much is the car worth? Is it worth looking at third party only? (or third party, fire and theft?) PJ
Janty
You could try Endsleigh. They have been brilliant with us...much cheaper than any other company for the last three years. We do get a discount for being teachers but worth a thought if either of your parents are teachers / have professional qualifications and you are adding them as additional drivers. emily95
Thanks, Janty! Will have a look there, my dad is a teacher PapaJuliet - I've tried both options, sometimes Third party/Third party, fire and theft is more expensive!
PapaJuliet
One thing to be wary of, they might sign you up for automatic renewal unless you explicitly say not to. This may be what you want, in which case no problem, but it might not be and you will have to remember to phone and cancel if you get a cheaper quote on renewal or sell the car. (This, of course, is what I forgot to do and I am now having a fight with my insurance company because they won't actually refund my money until they receive the insurance certificate back, which seems to have got lost in the post) PJ

Janty
This was mentioned on a tv prog a few weeks ago. They assume that you are more of a risk if you ask for third party. Bizarre, I know. Hubby and I were amazed.
emily95
It's crazy isn't it! Endsleigh have quoted £5628! Have applied for a 3rd job today - need to find the money for petrol/insurance renewals somewhere!
abwsco
Churchill has been cheapest for DD from when she first started learning to drive and did her own insurance.
merlina
ouch! Can you keep mileage below 6k (that can make a lot of difference with some companies)? The two thresholds for a big bump in premiums are usually 5-6k and 10-12k
emily95
Churchill said they couldn't give me a quote Yeah, I've been putting the mileage estimate as 6k, I don't think I'll do any more miles than that. My dad's rung the company that were meant to ring him back yesterday, and the person we need to speak to is out of the office! Argh! This really isn't going very well!
