New Pekins!

Recommended Posts

Oh dear, I did it again, went to look at some chickens and two found their way into a box and into my car! No names yet but meet my two new Pekin girls:

Silver pencilled and lavender

I really didn't intend on bringing any back and didn't take my carrier but the helpful man had a box handy....My OH wasn't as mad as i thought he'd be, maybe he's just resigned to the fact that I have chronic morehens! :)

Well, they've not been here 24 hours and they are already up to naughtyness! They are in temporary accommodation in the garage at the moment until I get my new house and run set up (it's big with lots of windows so they're not in the dark). I've fenced them in with some puppy panels which are over 2ft high. When I went to check them last night there was only the lavender left in the pen. I called OH and we then set about finding the escapee. Turns out she'd roosted in a bag full of newspapers at least 4 ft up! We put her back to bed and fashioned a lid to keep them in. They are such tiny things, I had no idea they'd be able to get out - still at least they were safely contained. Hoping OH is hard at work building the new run for them today!

:D did make me laugh, images of them putting the box over themselves, little feet just visable, walking to your car going through my mind

They are lovely, beautiful colourings :)

I put them together last night and they've had a day together. Suprisingly, the biggest Silkies have been fine with them but the smallest white Silkie is being mean and pecking them (still not sure if a boy a girl). It's not continuous and no blood has been drawn but not much fun to watch :( I've hung up some broccoli to try and distract them - both groups are on neutral ground in a new house/run. Hope they settle soon. Maybe I should have kept them apart til I was sure of sex and who is staying/going but thought it was better to mix them while they are still young. Will see what happens over the weekend.

I really went to see the chickens as the man had silver pencilled pekins and i'd never seen that colour before. When i saw the pair of them (lavender and pencilled) mooching about together i was smitten. Wondering if I should have just stuck with Pekins to avoid all the stress of waiting to find out if i've bought boys or girls as with the Silkies!

Things are settling, most of the time they are all ok but occasionally the Pekins get picked on by the white Silkie still. I've hung up some herbs and installed a dustbath for distraction. They are so funny to watch, the Pekins and Silkies definitely have different personalities though!
