My first week being a chicken mum

Recommended Posts

Well one week on and they have settled pretty well. Hetty has finally come out from under the coop and although Florence still seems to target her a little she's less timid and just gets out of her way rather than running for cover. Decided to order some omlet netting to let them out in the garden (glad I did because we've had to herd Lily back in as she runs from the shaking corn pot, not to it!) and its a pleasure to see them scratching and exploring, even in the rain today, and to see them run is just the funniest thing!! Not been a stress free week. As a complete newbie everything new I notice is followed by 'Is that normal? Should she do that? Shall I go to vet?' Paranoid I know! Just to say that anyone on here awaiting the arrival of their girls be prepared... Not everything will be as expected, not everything is fun (poo picking the sloppy smelly ones-disgusting!) but in one week my life has changed for the better and as I type this, watching my kids rolling around the floor, play fighting and shouting I'm feeling the need for a quick nip up the garden! Week one has been a hit, bring on week two! Xx

I'm so glad you've enjoyed your first week wannabe smallholder :D even if you don't much like the 'curry' poos. These are normal and yes they are :vom: too. Things will get better as your hens get tamer too. Don't fret too much about illnesses. Though the books are full of these and as a place to get advice the forum is too, chooks are really very hardy beings providing your husbandry is good, you keep them clean and you don't overstock for the space available.

So glad things seem to be settling down. It's amazing to watch them go from scared little girls to nip your fingers for the corn (ours did that transformation in under 3 weeks!). Looking forward to week two update and don't worry you aren't alone in the panic/is that normal!

So nice to read a happy post and glad your first week has gone well :D When I first saw a 'curry' poop, I instantly thought something was wrong with their insides! The 'curries' are just blergh! :vom:

I also LOVE to watch chickens run, it makes me smile every time!

Hope your chicken fun continues for a long time :)
