fibrowne
Hi, a chick has just hatched, it seemed to be attached to the egg via a membrane, the membrane has broken off and the chick is free, but after an inspection of the chick, it looks as though a little hole hasn't closed and a little bit of intenstines are sort of out. He is cheaping away, but should he be dispatched??? egg shell was very bloody and he took a long time to get out - perhaps 24 hours. Other eggs hatched successfully. Thank you. craftyhunnypie
If it is just its kind of umbilical cord - it may dry up & drop off. But you mention that it has a bloody hole. I hate to break it to you, but it will most likely die over night. I have had chicks like this & I put them under the electric hen ( heat source) over night & hope for the best. I basiclly give every chick a chance. I have had some make it & others not by morning. But I feel better for having given them the chance. Each person to their own really. Good luck with the little sweetie. Mother Nature will do what is right. Emma.x
Egluntyne
If you are absolutely sure that the intestines are hanging out, I'd despatch it immediately, as there is no hope and it would be the kindest thing to do. From the description, it sounds as if this is the case. If it is just the umbilicus, it will just look stringy, and will dry and wither and eventually drop off. fibrowne
Thank you very much for your replies. I have had a very traumatic 24 hours - the hole seemed to close and the chick looked great - and it died last night, I was absolutely shocked as it lived for 48 hours and ate and drank. I cannot believe it!!! Thank you for your replies. xx

zakjon-98
Sorry to hear about your chick what breed are you hatching?
fibrowne
Thank you. It was a vorwerk. I bought 6 fertile eggs, 3 hatched, 2 died and now I have one chap/lady left all on its own! I am trying to track down another chick to keep it company, as it is very lonely - I plan to move it into our house so at least it sees people. I wonder if you know how long it is necessary to stay under a heat lamp for? I have only hatched quail and I left them under it for 6 weeks. Thank you.
